Mark Envelope: Macbeth 1969 / AEA Self Submission

ABOUT: A reframing of Shakespeare’s classic exploring a soldier’s experience returning home from a distant/foreign war. It’s Christmas Eve 1969. A hospital somewhere in middle America.

Note: this production will be taking a naturalistic approach to the language.

Seeking:

Soldier 1 (Macbeth):

(African-American or Latino Male 20s.) Carries the swagger and charm of a soldier recently returned from victorious combat. But haunted by the war, unable to sleep, he struggles to contain a monster deep inside him, waiting to be unleashed. Possible nudity.

Nurse 2 (Lady Macbeth):

(Female 20s any ethnicity). Wife to Macbeth who was drafted and sent to war, now recently reunited with. Harbors a secret hatred for the Politican who she blames for sending her husband off to war and for the child she lost while he was away. Possible nudity.

Soldier 2 (Banquo) / A Civilian (Macduff):

(Caucasian Male 20s.). The Good Soldier, the Patriot, the honorable man. A victim of the war, he suffers from burns across his entire body. Served with Macbeth in the war. The CIVILIAN: A Pacifist, a draft dodger.
