BREAKDOWN

Lanes Coven Theater Company 2024 Season

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM

SEEKING:

HERMIA: Female, or non-binary/gender fluid. 18-mid 30s. Smaller stature than her best friend, Helena, who she’s somewhat concerned with. Romantic and idealistic. Bold enough to take matters into her own hands. Scrappy, strong, independent, unmarried woman, engaged to Demetrius but in love with Lysander. NOTE: Very likely physical intimacy with this role.

HELENA: CAST. Female. 20s-30s. Taller than Hermia, smart, industrious and observant, witty, and tirelessly working to overcome the obstacles to being with her true love, Demetrius. NOTE: There’s potential for physical intimacy with this role.

DEMETRIUS: Male. 20s–mid 30s. Over 5’10’’. More rigid and uptight perhaps, than his friend Lysander. The more likely to be concerned with traditional measures of success; the guy mom & dad would choose; certain sense of entitlement; capable of cruelty, but also learns forgiveness late in the game. NOTE: Very likely physical intimacy with this role.

PUCK: Any gender, 20s-40s. Possesses an innocence or youthful ebullience. There’s a sense of mischief or aloofness, like a server who can’t quite get their orders right, easily distracted, loves stirring things up.

LYSANDER: CAST. Male, 20s-mid 30s. May not be the best pick in the eyes of a father figure, but great with words and passionately in love with Hermia. Creative, and will defend what he loves, with his life! Young in spirit and perhaps a bit crushed by his current scenario, the suppressing world of Athens, he’s a dreamer. Not a practical thinker at all. NOTE: There’s potential for physical intimacy with this role.

THESEUS/OBERON: CAST. Male. 30s–50s. Commanding presence. Possesses a sense of authority, sensual presence, and the ability to be goofy when necessary. Compassionate and capable of forgiveness. NOTE: Physical intimacy and movement is required with this role.

HIPPOLYTA / TITANIA: CAST. Female, 30s-50s. Commanding presence. Hippolyta is Theseus’ equal but constrained by the hyper masculine overbearing and stark world of Athens. Posseses a sense of authority, sensual presence, and deviance.

BOTTOM: CAST. Any Gender, 30+. The central figure in the rude mechanicals subplot, and in the production of Pyramus and Thisbe. Bottom is on another level than their fellow actors whether because of extraordinary self-belief, untapped talent, or extreme humility and kindness; all in all, their love for the theater is true. The humor surrounding Bottom often stems from the fact that they are totally unaware of their own ridiculousness. NOTE: There’s potential for physical intimacy with this role.

QUINCE: Any Gender, 20s-70s. Leader of the Rude Mechanicals aka the local amateur acting troup, patient and caring. Strong skills in Shakespeare and physical acting, excellent comic instincts; warm and endearing.

FLUTE (Rude Mechanical) / COBWEB (fairy): Male Identifying, 18-40s. Flute is the “youngest” of the Mechanicals, a bellows-mender by trade, an inexperienced actor, and very apprehensive about playing a girl (Thisbe) in the play within the play. Doubles as COBWEB, strong, and playful, protective of Titania, mistrustful of Oberon and Puck. NOTE: There’s potential for physical intimacy with this role.

SNUG / PEACEBLOSSOM: Any Gender, 18 and up. Snug is a cabinet maker, very shy, and an inexperienced actor, does not want to frighten the audience with their impersonation of a lion in “Pyramus and Thisbe.” As Peasblossom: strong, and playful, protective of Titania; mistrustful of Oberon and Puck. Strong skills in Shakespeare and physical acting, with the potential for singing.

THE SERVANT OF TWO MASTERS

SEEKING:

Actors of all genders and ethnicities, those who are great at the style of commedia del arte, and those with stage combat experience are encouraged to audition.

TRUFFALDINO - CAST. 30s-40s. Servant first to Beatrice, and afterward to Florindo. He’s in love with Smeraldina. The “Zanni” archetype and creating lazzi’s in the style of commedia del arte, and able to stage-fight.

BEATRICE - CAST. 30s-40s. Master to Truffaldino, a lady of Turin and disguised as her brother Federigo Rasponi. Florindo is her love interest, and unbeknownst to her, Truffeldino’s other “Master.” The “Capitano” commedia type; boastful, brash, larger than life, and good at collaborating with the “Zanni” type.

FLORINDO / PANTALONE – 30s-50s. Master to Truffaldino, of Turin and the love interest of Beatrice. The “innamorati” type, in love with love, and in love with himself, legato elegant and smooth movement, this archetype is unmasked. Doubles as PANTALONE, a Venetian merchant (based on the Pantalone “old man” archetype) who prioritizes money and getting his daughter married off, he can be oblivious in regard to the faster characters scheming around him. We laugh at his aloofness and his near-death experiences.

SMERALDINA / WAITER / PORTER – 18-30s. Maidservant to Clarice and the love interest of Truffaldino (based on the Columbina archetype).

CLARICE - 20s-30s. Pantalone's Daughter and in love with Silvio but promised to Federigo Rasponi (who Beatrice is disguised as). The “innamorati” type, in love with love, and in love with herself, legato elegant and smooth movement NOTE: This archetype is unmasked.

SILVIO - 20s-30s. In love with Clarice, and hot tempered, out to destroy Federigo, Clarice’s betrothed. The “innamorati” type, in love with love, and in love with himself, legato elegant and smooth movement NOTE: This archetype is unmasked.

BRIGHELLA / AS CAST – 30s-50s. The Innkeeper of the town. Observes all the comings and goings of this farce. NOTE: This character will likely be unmasked.
