Breakdown

Man 1: “The Lonesome Traveler” (principal narrator of the evening). Caucasian. Principal instrument: Banjo. Also plays guitar. Stand-up bass a plus. Vocal range: Tenor/Lyric Baritone. Age range: 25-45. Preferably tall and lanky. The character of the Lonesome Traveler, along with Woman 1, is a constant presence throughout the evening. He is our guide. He personifies at various times Dave Guard, A.P. Carter, Pete Seeger, Lou Gottlieb and Paul Stookie. A sense of humor and the ability to interact with and appeal to the audience is a must. Audition: Prepare 2 short excerpts from songs of the era (1926-1965): 1 verse, 1 chorus each; one with Banjo accompaniment, one with guitar accompaniment. Two contrasting musical styles should be represented (early Pete Seeger, early Carter Family, 1950’s or 1960’s folk, etc.).

Man 2: Caucasian. Principal instruments: Guitar and Harmonica. Bongo Drums a plus. Vocal range: Baritone. Age range: 20s. Relatively small stature. He personifies at various times Woody Guthrie, Fred Hellerman, Nick Reynolds, Alex Hassilev, Gordon Lightfoot, Peter Yarrow and Bob Dylan. Audition: Prepare 2 short excerpts from songs of the era (1926-1965): 1 verse, 1 chorus each; both with guitar accompaniment. Two contrasting musical styles should be represented (early Woody Guthrie, 1960’s folk (Gordon Lightfoot or Bob Dylan, etc.).

Man 3: Caucasian. Principal instrument: Guitar. Strong vocalist with a wide range from Tenor/Lyric Baritone to Bass Baritone. Age range: 20-35. He personifies at various times Bob Shane, John Lomax, Lee Hays, Cisco Houston and Glenn Yarborough. Audition: Prepare 2 short excerpts from songs of the era (1926-1965): 1 verse, 1 chorus each; both with guitar accompaniment. Two contrasting musical styles should be represented (Cisco Houston, 1960’s folk (Kingston Trio, The Limeliters, etc.).

Man 4: African American. Principal instrument: Guitar (preferably 12-string). Vocal range: Baritone. Age range 30-45. He personifies at various times Huddie Ledbetter (Leadbelly), Harry Belafonte and others. Audition: Prepare 2 short excerpts from songs of the era (1926-1965): 1 verse, 1 chorus each; both with guitar accompaniment. Two contrasting musical styles should be represented (early blues or Leadbelly, 1950’s calypso (Belafonte).

Woman 1: “The Muse.” African American. Principal instrument: Voice. She is ageless. She personifies at various times Odetta and others. Please be prepared to two sing a capella in two varying styles (preferably blues and gospel).

Woman 2: Caucasian. Principal instrument: Guitar. Age range 20-30. Preferably tall and thin. She personifies at various times Sara Carter, Sis Cunningham, Mary Travers and Joan Baez. Audition: Prepare 2 short excerpts from songs of the era (1926-1965): 1 verse, 1 chorus each; both with guitar accompaniment. Two contrasting musical styles should be represented (early Carter Family, 1960’s folk (Peter, Paul & Mary or Joan Baez).

Woman 3: Caucasian. Principal instruments: Guitar and (preferably) Autoharp. Age range: 20-30. She personifies at various times Maybelle Carter, Bess Lomax, Ronnie Gilbert and Joni Mitchell. Audition: Prepare 2 short excerpts from songs of the era (1926-1965): 1 verse, 1 chorus each; both with accompaniment. Two contrasting musical styles should be represented (early Carter Family, 1950’s/60’s folk (The Weavers, Joni Mitchell, etc.).
