Seeking (all roles are available):
Katie Roche:
Seeking actress (who will be at least 18 by January 2013) to play 17-20. Katie is exceptionally bright, but lacks education or refinement. She is pretty, ambitious, passionate, stubborn, explosive—childishly impulsive and strong-willed. “Perhaps the most remarkable thing about her is a sort of inward glow, which she continually tries to smother and which breaks out either in delight or desperation according to circumstances.” A remarkable challenge for an inspired young actress with discipline and strong craft.
Stanislaus Gregg:
Mid 40s; maybe older. Confident; a strong, quiet presence. Reticent; he is always “afraid to say a word more than he feels”, but has an explosive temper all the same. A “mixture of truculence and repose. At one moment he is miles from his surroundings, at the next fiercely concentrated on whoever he is speaking to.” Leading role.
Amelia Gregg:
Something over 50. An “odd little woman”, very meek, nervous, sweet to excess, devoted to her brother and blind to the faults of others.
Reuben:
60 or more. Wandering holy man whom people seek for guidance as well as healing. Shabby-looking fellow, with a commanding presence.
Michael Maguire:
20s. Attractive, sincere, a bit awkward, but “not altogether without dignity.” Good-hearted and full of feeling. Musical ability a plus, but not a necessity (Michael plays the accordion).
Jo Mahony:
20s. Another young man of the village, and a friend of Michael’s. Sweet, excitable young man.
Margaret Drybone:
About 40. Sister of Stanislaus and Amelia. Has an air of suspicious, brooding intensity. Sharp and unpleasant.
Frank Lawlor:
Mid 50s. Amelia’s suitor, a frank, friendly man. Charming, with a good sense of humor.
