Seeking:
Note: The play is set in Wiltshire, England, so a regional accent would be an advantage. The characters are country folk from a working-class background.
Pea:
AVAILABLE. Seeking actress 18+ to play 16. Young girl from the Wiltshire countryside. Dropped out of school and spends her days hanging around with Johnny Byron and the gang, getting high. Perhaps looks poor and small. Bold, feisty, quirky and funny.
Wesley:
AVAILABLE. Late 40s – mid 50s. Pub landlord; integral part of the village community. Hard-working, but fond of a drink or two himself. Henpecked by his wife and the brewery – appears to be bullied into doing things he doesn’t want to, such as Morris dancing on Village Fete Day. Lovable fella. Loyal friends with Johnny Byron.
Marky:
AVAILABLE. Age 6. Rooster’s son. Quiet and sweet. In awe of his dad, despite Rooster’s negligence, and despite the constant torment by his schoolmates, who know of Rooster’s place in society.
Danny Whitworth / Understudy for Four Roles:
AVAILABLE. Danny is in his 20s. Non-speaking role. Well-built, thick-set and hard-faced. One of Troy's brothers. Feared by the local village. Height over 6 feet an advantage. Makes a brief appearance at the end of the play. Actor will also understudy …
Davey: Early 20s. Fork-lift operator. Proud of his heritage and very content with village life. Likes to party, and is always found at the center of things. Likes a drink, and takes recreational drugs.
Lee: “Lad” from the Wiltshire countryside. “Job seeker” and a real favorite in the village – well- known by everybody, and much liked. Bright, funny and quick-witted. Never misses a party or a chance to get high with his mates.
Troy: Contract worker. Bullying thug – domineering; people are scared of him in the village. Unpredictable, with a dangerous energy. Thick-set with a hard, weathered face. It is generally understood that it would be a mistake to get on the wrong side of him.
Mr. Parsons: Council official. Works diligently, and clearly takes his job very seriously. Pedantic; does everything by the book; seems to lack a sense of humor.
Frank Whitworth / Understudy for Three Roles:
AVAILABLE. Frank is in his late 40s – late 50s. Non-speaking role. Well-built, thick-set and hard faced. One of Troy's brothers. Feared by the local village. Height over 6 feet an advantage. Makes a brief appearance at the end of the play. Actor will also understudy Wesley (see above) and …
“Rooster”: Opinionated, eccentric ex-daredevil and teller of fantastically improbable stories. Has a young son whom he rarely sees. Lives in a caravan in the local woods, holding parties where he gets drunk and supplies drugs – some of them to underage kids. Onstage role is cast with Mark Rylance.
Professor: An eccentric. Elderly gentleman. Extremely well-mannered. Passionate about life. Clearly well-liked and respected by everyone in the village. He is losing his marbles, and appears to be in a world of his own most of the time.
Dawn / Mrs. Fawcett Understudy:
AVAILABLE. Track age: 30s. Dawn: Johnny Byron’s ex-wife and the mother of his child. Has a hard shell, and has a realistic outlook on life. Unfazed by the stories of gritty village life, but anxious about how Johnny’s reputation will affect their son. Tough, fearless and strong with Johnny, but also shows a weaker, loving side. Mrs. Fawcett: Council official. Has been working for the Council for many years, and it shows. Quick-witted and no-nonsense. Clearly likes a bit of fun in her spare time, but takes her duties for the council seriously.
Phaedra / Tanya / Pea Understudy:
AVAILABLE. Seeking actress 18+ to play 16. Phaedra: Country girl from Wiltshire. Leaves school; comes from a troubled family background, which has meant she has had to grow up fast. Waif-like and fragile looking, but mouthy and rebellious. Tanya and Pea: Young girls from the Wiltshire countryside. Both left school. They spend their days hanging around with Johnny Byron and the gang, getting high. Confident and mouthy.
