Lucy:
Any ethnicity, 30s. The opposite of Emma. A hard life at the wrong end of London has made her, despite the odds, an optimistic survivor. But fate has never been, nor will be, on her side. Strong belt singer with excellent pop sensibility, and vocal creativity. Range: A below middle C to belted Eb. LEAD.
Emma Carew:
Update, posted 3/21/12: Character is now described as Caucasian. 30s. Our “English Rose”. Fair in looks and fair in outlooks. As total a contrast to Lucy as Jekyll is to Hyde, except that both girls are good souls. Soprano with a pop mix/belt. Must have a true high A, and able to straight tone (in a strong mix) a high F.
Sir Danvers Carew:
Any ethnicity, 50s–60s. Pillar of respectable London society, a lion of a man. A widower. Dotes on his only daughter, Emma; believes in her forthcoming marriage toJekyll, who is his protégé, but worries about Jekyll’s hot-headedness. Baritone – warm voice that has aged gracefully. Range: low Bb to D above middle C.
John Utterson:
Any ethnicity, 30s. Jekyll’s lawyer and life-long friend; more conservative in his thinking, but loyal to the last. Same age as Jekyll, and his greatest admirer. Strong baritone, top note a strong G.
Jekyll / Hyde:
CAST (Constantine Maroulis). Auditioning performers will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary. Jekyll/Hyde are any ethnicity, 30s. Jekyll: Role-model, smart young London doctor, based in the prestigious Harley Street. One to watch, with his groundbreaking original medical ideas and the passion to pursue them. Good, kind. Hyde: The resulting release of all Jekyll’s inhibitions and evil characteristics – the opposite of all Jekyll’s goodness and civilized attitudes.EVIL incarnate, vengeful to the ultimate degree, he executes (literally) Jekyll’s inner desire to be rid of his enemies. Baritenor with excellent pop sensibility. Must have a strong baritone, and a true, belted high A. LEAD.
