Lunch from 1 - 2. New York City

Please prepare a brief, traditional musical theatre song in the style of the season (1930s/40s classic Broadway/standards). No contemporary pop, please. Bring sheet music in the correct key; an accompanist will be provided, but may not transpose. Please bring a photo and resume, stapled back-to-back.

All dates are in 2012. All roles are available.

SISTERS OF SWING - THE STORY OF THE ANDREWS SISTERS

Performances: 6/8 – 7/1

[PATTY] Early 20s. Lead singer, high belter – she is the youngest Andrews sister. Clown of the group, adores the spotlight. Finds optimism in every situation. Fun loving, care-free, naive, wide eyed, with a big personality and a genuine love of performance. High belter. Must be excellent with part-singing/harmony.

[MAXENE] Early to mid 20s. The middle sister. She is outspoken and always testing boundaries. The most adventuresome of the sisters, she often finds difficulty in finding her own voice as the middle child. Rebellious, free-spirited, idealistic stubborn, and refreshingly independent for a woman of her era. Soprano. Must be excellent with part-singing/harmony.

[LAVERNE] Late 20s – early 30s. The oldest of the sisters, she is five years older than Maxene and very bright. As the oldest, it is in her nature to assume responsibility for her sisters in the absence of their parents. Always organized and motherly Laverne is the best musician of the group and takes the work of rehearsal and performance seriously. Performer must play the piano. Alto. Must be excellent with part-singing/harmony.

[MAN #1] Plays characters from mid 30s to Mid 40s. Performer must be a strong actor/excellent singer, should feel paternal, distinguished and strong with extreme character actor versatility. Plays a variety of characters including Lou Levy, a New York wheeler-dealer and over twenty characters – including iconic celebrities (Bing Crosby, Johnny Carson, Danny Kaye, etc.) and also will be required to speak (briefly) in Italian, German, British, Spanish and New York accents.

[VIC SCHOEN] mid-to-late 20s. The sisters’ arranger and Patty‘s love interest. Professional pianist (actor must play at a professional level).

DAMES AT SEA

[MONA KENT] 30s-40s, a torrid, temperamental, tough-as-nails musical-comedy diva. Great singer (brassy belt), Must be an excellent tap dancer with a terrific, brassy Broadway belt singing voice. Alto (low G to D sharp):

[JOAN] mid-to-late 20s, a wise-cracking, gum-chewing, goodtime chorus girl. Think Joan Blondell in 1930s Busby Berkeley musicals. Must be an excellent tap dancer, with strong character vocal abilities. Belter (low A to D)

[RUBY] 18-25, a sweet-faced, good-hearted star-to-be who arrives on a bus from Utah with"nothing but a pair of tap shoes in her suitcase and a prayer in her heart," much like Ruby Keeler in Busby Berkeley musicals of the 1930s. She pairs up with Dick. Mezzo who can belt (low A flat to E). Must be an excellent tap dancer with a terrific singing voice.

[DICK] 20s, a good-natured, handsome, hard-working, sailor / aspiring song-writer, much like Dick Powell in the Busby Berkeley musicals of the 1930s. He pairs up with Ruby. Bari-tenor (low A flat to high A). Must be an excellent tap dancer with a great singing voice.

[LUCKY] mid-to-late 20s, a goofy, fun-loving, romantic sailor and a former flame of Joan’s who quickly finds himself renewing their sweet “sidekick” romance. Character baritone (low A to F). Must be an excellent tap dancer with character vocal abilities.

[HENNESSEY/THE CAPTAIN] 40s. One actor plays both roles. Hennessey is an ambitious, down-on-his-luck Broadway producer (a la Julian Marsh in 42nd Street). The Captain is the commanding officer of Dick and Lucky’s battleship, and pairs up with Mona Kent. Tenor (C to high A flat). Excellent singer/actor with a commanding presence – tap skills are a plus, but not a necessity.
