Seeking:
Alan Raleigh:
(35-45) – a corporate lawyer, very engaged with his high-stress job, to the point of distraction. The schoolyard spat between his son and the Novak’s son is trivial to him, and he doesn’t think the parents should be a part of the reconciliation.
Annette Raleigh:
(35-45) – self-identifies as working in “wealth-management,” it is important to her that she takes responsibility for her sons actions and doesn’t look like a negligent mother in front of the Novak’s. She is stressed and high-strung at the start of the play, but reveals a dark side as things unravel.
Michael Novak:
(35-45) – a wholesaler, who is low-key, warm and welcoming. He is a peacekeeper and aims for fast resolution.
Veronica Novak:
(35-45) – is a writer and anthropologist, who has spent time studying and researching in Africa and the Middle East. She is uptight, resolute and firm, yet attempts to have a calm, easygoing demeanor. She too, reveals a dark quality in her personality.
MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM
By August Wilson
Director: Liesl Tommy
1st Rehearsal: 2/14/12. Runs: 3/14 – 4/8/12
Important Note: For roles that describe the character playing an instrument, actors must play those instruments described.
Seeking:
Sturdyvant:
(Male) mid-50s - Causasian - preoccupied with money and insensitive to the performers with whom he prefers to deal with at arms length.
Irvin:
(Male) mid-50s - Caucasian - is a tall, fleshy man who prides himself on his knowledge of African American culture.
Cutler:
(Male) mid-50s - African American - plays trombone and guitar and is the leader of his group, which includes Toledo and Slow Drag. His knowledge of music is limited to the chord he is playing at the time he is playing it. He is the most sensible and energetic of his band mates and he has all of the qualities of a loner except introspection.
Toledo:
(Male) mid-50s - African American - is the piano player, in control of his instrument, understands it, and recognizes that its limitations are an extension of himself. He is the only one of the group who can read. He is self-taught but misunderstands and misapplies his knowledge, though he is quick to penetrate to the core of a situation and his insights are thought-provoking.
Slow Drag:
(Male) mid-50s - African American - is the bass player and is the most bored by life. He resembles Cutler, but lacks his energy. He is deceptively intelligent, though appears to be slow. He is a large man with a wicked smile.
Levee:
(Male) early 30s - African American - has a flamboyance that is sometimes subtle and sneaks up on you. His temper is rakish and bright. He lacks fuel for himself and is somewhat of a buffoon, but it is intelligent buffoonery, clearly calculated to shift control of the situation where he can grasp it. His voice is strident and totally dependent on his manipulation of breath. He is a trumpet player who often plays wrong notes. He often gets skill and talent confused with each other.
Ma Rainey:
(Female) 40s to 50s - African American - her manner is simple and direct, sometimes fierce, she carries herself in a royal fashion.
Policeman:
(Male) 30s to 50s - Caucasian - a policeman who tries to arrest Ma Rainey. He is firm and official.
Dussie Mae:
(Female) 20s-30s - African American - her greatest asset is the sensual energy which seems to flow from her.
Sylvester:
(Male) 20s-30s - African American - is an Arkansas country boy, the size of a fullback, a little overwhelmed by the people and atmosphere in the city. Most of the time, he stutters when he speaks.
