10 AM – Equity male singer/rappers who move well. 165 West 46th Street, 2nd Floor

2 PM – Equity female singer/rappers who move well. New York City

Please prepare 16 bars of a rap song AND 16 bars of a song to sing (with piano accompaniment). Those who rap but do not sing may perform 32 bars of a rap song in lieu of an accompanied song. “Boom box” provided. If singing, bring sheet music in the correct key; an accompanist will be provided, but may not transpose.

If auditioning for the role of Griffy, you may accompany yourself on guitar while singing (in addition to performing a rap selection).

New musical inspired by the work of Tupac Shakur. Set in the present day on the inner-city streets of a Midwestern industrial city. Tells the story of two childhood friends (John and Vertus) and their extended families as they struggle to reconcile the challenges and realities of their daily lives with their hopes, dreams and ambitions.

My Block Chorus (M/F):

These characters are African American, 18-32, all shapes, sizes and types. The more individual the better. Seeking strong singer/rappers who move well/dance.

Also seeking:

Brian (“Griffy”) Griffin:

Caucasian man, early 20s. Mechanic running his father’s auto body shop in a predominantly black neighborhood. The kind of neighborhood white kid who might get accused of thinking he’s “a brother” because of the way he talks and acts. Basically a good kid with good intentions, though not always the most sensitive or aware. Strong singing voice and guitar skills necessary; strong rapping skills a plus.

John Caviness:

African American man, mid - late 20s. Neighborhood guy fresh out of jail, two strikes against him, and looking to make a clean start. Keeps his thoughts and feelings close to the vest. Loyal, trustworthy, determined; out to prove everyone wrong and make a life for himself as a car mechanic. As neighborhood violence escalates, he is torn between what might be “right” and what he feels is his duty to his “boys”.

Nunn:

African American man, mid - late 20s. Childhood friend of John’s. Hard-edged from living amidst violence for so long. The guy you want on your side, not the guy you want to cross. Fiercely protective and loyal, not afraid to engage when he or one of his own feels wronged or threatened.

Andrea Weston:

African American woman, mid - late 40s. Mother of John’s closest childhood friend, Vertus. Mothers with tough but compassionate love. Knows the threats and challenges her son faces, and does her best to equip him with what she can to help him get by and thrive. Still, she worries … and longs for peace and quiet in their lives.

Corinne:

African American woman, mid - late 20s. Vertus’s girlfriend. Beautiful, sexy and confident; she doesn’t need a man to take care of her. Knows how to stand her ground and stand up for what she wants. Her feelings for John resurface when he is released from jail; she loves the man, but not the actions.
