Hamlet’s intense struggle to understand the meaning of life has captivated audiences for more than 400 years. Now, Sarasota audiences will be the first to see a distinctively Cuban Hamlet, which reveals new perspectives on the classic work, while staying true to Shakespeare’s original story. With performances in both Spanish and English, this new adaptation is a fresh and stunning portrayal of a son’s struggle to pursue justice, and the consequences that threaten to destroy the lives of those he loves.

NOTE: Hamlet: Prince of Cuba will be performed in both Spanish AND English. Actors submitted MUST be BI-LINGUAL

Laertes:

(Early 20s – Late 20s) Fluent in Spanish and English. Mixed ethnicity. Noble, a scholar and a soldier. A natural leader, a bit impetuous.

Ophelia / and Yentl in YENTL:

(Early 20s – Late 20s) Fluent in Spanish and English. Mixed ethnicity. Beautiful both in face and spirit, youthful, innocent, delicate and fragile. Eventually goes mad.

YENTL

Director: Gordon Greenberg

Playwright: Leah Napolin and Isaac Bashevis Singer

Based on short story by: Isaac Bashevis Singer

1st Rehearsal: 12/15/11. Runs: 1/18/12 – 4/28/12

In 19th century Eastern Europe, options for young women are few, and the study of Torah and Talmud are forbidden. Yentl’s only hope of pursuing her dreams is to disguise herself as a boy in order to learn. But when she falls in love, she must decide whether or not to reveal the truth. For everyone who has wanted to do something and was told they couldn’t, and for everyone who has loved the wrong person for the right reason, this beautifully written play with music resonates with pure magic.

Yentl:

(To read Late teens – Early 20s) Studious, intelligent, independent, and fierce. Devoted to her faith. Not classically beautiful, but there is an intense quality that makes her captivating; could believably pass as a boy.
