Seeking (all roles are available (i.e. not yet offered and accepted)):

Tracy Turnblad:

Seeking actress to play a high school-age Caucasian girl. 5’4” or shorter, must be heavyset. Tracy is outgoing, unstoppable and good-hearted, with a vibrant, lovable, spirited personality. Exudes high energy and a joy for life. Loves to dance. Becomes a teen heroine. Dreams of fame. Fights to racially integrate “The Corny Collins Show”. Strong pop belt (high E, low G). Great mover.

Edna Turnblad:

Seeking a male actor to play a Caucasian woman, 40s-50s. Edna is Tracy’s mother. Working-class, devoted, loving housewife, struggling with her realities and her dreams. Runs a laundry business out of her home. Sincere, not campy. Role requires a funny, grand character actor with singing ability (high F, low B; if bass, high C; low G or F #) who can convincingly play a woman. Large physique.

Link Larkin:

Seeking actor to play a high school-age Caucasian boy. Link is handsome, sexy, clean-cut, good-hearted, honest, sincere and down-to-earth. Heartthrob of the local TV teen dance show. Amber’s boyfriend at first, he soon falls for Tracy. Strong pop singer (high A, low C). Great mover.

Penny Pingleton:

Seeking actress to play a high school-age Caucasian girl. Penny is Tracy’s ditzy, neurotic, devoted, perky best friend. A plain exterior hides an actually attractive young girl. Requires a very funny actress with a good physique. Strong pop belt (high G, low A). Strong mover.

Seaweed J. Stubbs:

Seeking actor to play a high school-age African American boy. Seaweed is Motormouth Maybelle’s cool, sexy, street-smart, good-hearted son. Becomes Penny’s boyfriend. His dance lessons help Tracy get chosen for the local teen dance show. Strong, soulful tenor pop singer (high Bb or B; low D). Great mover.

Motormouth Maybelle:

African American woman, 40s-50s. Seaweed and Little Inez’s mother. Queen of Baltimore Soul music; radio DJ and owner of a downtown record shop. Powerful and inspiring, with an infectious, bold and brassy personality. Strong-willed and completely up-front, Large physique. Strong, soulful gospel/pop singer (high D, low F or E), mezzo with belt.

Corny Collins:

Caucasian man, 30s. Host of the local TV teen dance show. Handsome, charming, engaging, smooth and a bit cocky. Stylish and hip enough to be idolized by the “kids”. Strong pop singer (high A, low D).

Velma Von Tussle:

Caucasian woman, 40s-50s. Former beauty queen. Amber’s mother. Producer of the local TV teen dance show. Upscale, attractive, prejudiced snob who always wants her daughter in the spotlight. Funny, biting, manipulative, controlling scheming “stage mother”. Wants her daughter to achieve the stardom she never had. Good character singer (high E, low Ab).

Amber Von Tussle:

Seeking actress to play a high school-age Caucasian girl. The bratty, selfish ice princess of the local TV teen dance show. Attractive snob. Good physique (“well built”), which she uses to her advantage. Despite her lack of talent, she is willing to do anything to win the title of “Miss Teenage Baltimore”. Very funny. Strong pop belter (high G, low A). Great mover.

Wilbur Turnblad:

Caucasian man, Male, 40s-50s. Tracy’s father. Working-class inventor and owner of the local joke shop. Sweet, goofy, childlike personality. Adores his family and encourages Tracy to follow her dream. Unassuming and big-hearted. Excellent comic timing needed. Role requires a thin, funny character actor. Good character singer (low B; high F# w/falsetto to A), baritone.

Little Inez:

African American girl, 10-16. Spunky, tough, street-wise. Outgoing. Older than her years. Seaweed’s lovable little sister. Smart and cute, and uses it. Strong Broadway/pop singer (high F, low A). Strong mover.

Female Authority Figure:

One actress plays various zany Caucasian female characters, 40s-50s. Characters include Prudy Pingleton (Penny’s uptight, high-strung and small-minded mother), a sadistic Gym Teacher, a Cop and a sardonic Prison Matron (think “Saturday Night Live”). Actress also understudies Velma. Must be a versatile, sharp, funny, inventive character actress with a strong singing voice (mezzo with belt).

Male Authority Figure:

One actor plays various zany Caucasian male characters, 40s-50s. Characters include Harriman F. Spitzer (nervous businessman; President of Ultra Clutch Hairspray), condescending high school Principal, Mr. Pinky (flamboyant fashion boutique owner of Mr. Pinky’s Hefty Hideaway), a Cop and a corrupt Prison Guard (think “Saturday Night Live”). Actor also understudies Edna Turnblad and Wilbur Turnblad. Must be a versatile, heavyset, sharp, funny, inventive character actor with a good singing voice.
