Based on Edna Ferber's sweeping novel of the same name. Tells the story of Jordan “Bick” Benedict, a wealthy rancher in early 20th-Century Texas, over the span of 25 years. Bick struggles to keep his expansive ranch Reata, his family, and the purity of his legacy intact against a backdrop of racism and the ever-increasing greed of the oil industry.

Seeking (all roles are available unless otherwise specified):

Bick:

30s-40s. Rugged, handsome rancher from Texas. Has great strength and character. Has the potential to be incredibly tough, both within his family and with those on the outside who might threaten them. Major role for an actor with enormous sex appeal and humor, as well as strong dramatic skills and a great singing voice. Dynamic leading man. Contemporary baritone w/strong E's and Fs (to G preferred).

Leslie:

30s-40s. An undeniable beauty with a charismatic spirit. Hailing from the upper-class gentility of Virginia, Leslie is an intelligent, well-educated, slightly sheltered girl whose thirst for adventure leads her to fall in love with and hastily marry Bick, a visiting cattle rancher. Her romanticized ideas of marriage and the unknown expanse of Texas lead to disillusionment when she realizes that she can't compete with Reata. Major role for an actress with enormous sex appeal and humor, as well as strong dramatic skills and a great singing voice. Dynamic leading lady. Mezzo soprano with a contemporary mix.

Jett:

Late 20s-30s. Sexy, with a dark side. From the wrong side of the tracks, but you'd be interested in walking along them with him. Tenor (to C), but not legit. Has to be able to rock a bit.

Luz:

40s-50s. Bick's older sister, and the immovable backbone of Reata. Functions more as a parent to Bick than as a sibling. Tough, pragmatic and fiercely protective of her family and her way of life. Alto with strong mix/belt.

Bawley:

Ages from 50-75. Bick's uncle. Like his nephew, he is educated and has traveled. Has spent the majority of his life on Reata, and belongs to the land. Fun, with a
gentle side. Baritone with strong upper register.

Lil Luz:

Early 20s. Bick and Leslie's daughter, a true child of Texas. Would rather rope cattle with her father than sip tea with her mother. High-spirited, headstrong, spitfire of a girl, tough-talking. Strong sex appeal. It's easy to see how she could get into a situation that might be over her head and her years. Soprano with a high mix. Belt to F.

Lupe:

Latina, 30s-50s. Spanish speaker. Mainstay of the Benedict household, and a maternal figure for the Mexican community of workers on Reata. Strong forceful mezzo/belt.

Jordy Jr.:

20s. Bick and Leslie's son. Serious. Smart. Marries Juana. Baritone.

Juana:

Latina, 20s. Smart and gentle, but a determined young woman. Mezzo soprano w/mix.

Polo:

Update, posted 7/21/11: Role previously listed as available is now CAST. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary. Latino, 50s-60s. Spanish speaker. Long-standing employee of the Reata ranch. Father-, then grandfather-figure to the vaqueros and the Benedict family. In later years, suffers from Alzheimer's. Lyric folk baritone. Plays guitar (not looking for expertise, but must have security/familiarity with the instrument, as he opens the show accompanying himself on the guitar).

Statement of casting personnel: “We are committed to casting diverse companies. We encourage qualified actors of all cultures, ages, disabled and non-disabled to attend.”
