Gateway Playhouse 2012 – Equity Principal Auditions

Please prepare a brief musical theater song appropriate for the season. No pop-rock. Bring sheet music in the correct key; an accompanist will be provided, but may not transpose.

Please bring a photo and resume, stapled back-to-back.

All dates are in 2012. All roles are available unless otherwise specified.

CATS Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber. Based on poems by T. S. Eliot. Dir/Choreo: Jacob Brent. Mus Dir TBA. 1st reh: 5/1. Runs 5/16-6/2.

[
RUM TUM TUGGER] Male, 20s-30s, Rock Star, Mick Jagger type. Iconoclast, rebel, loves the ladies. Excellent rock singer with falsetto. Must move well.

[
GRIZABELLA] Female. Outcast, was a Glamour Cat in her early years but left the tribe in disgrace. EXCELLENT belter to E-flat (sings Memory) and strong actress.

OLD DEUTERONOMY] Male, 40s – 60s. The leader of the tribe, he is ageless, soulful, and mature. Must move well. BariTenor to a legit G. Resonant, flexible voice.

[
MUNKUSTRAP] Male, 20s-early 30s. 5 feet 11 and up. The prince of the tribe, youthful, attractive. Excellent Baritone/Tenor to a legit G. Must move very well.

[
MISTOFFELEES] Male, on the shorter side, Excellent Dancer, proficient in Ballet and Jazz. Must have turns in Second (pirouettes à la seconde). Magical, aloof, enigmatic, quirky, loves to show off.

[ASPARAGUS / Gus] – Male, 50’s – 70s. The theatre cat. One of the oldest tribe members. He was once an actor.

MY FAIR LADY Music: Frederick Loewe. Book/Lyrics: Alan Jay Lerner. Dir/Choreo: Keith Andrews. Mus Dir TBA. 1st reh: 5/22. Runs 6/6-23.

[PROFESSOR HENRY HIGGINS]: 40’s-50s Male. English teacher and aristocrat. Must be an older leading man type. English accent is a must.

ELIZA DOOLITTLE] Age 17-30. Cockney/Upper class. Cockney flower girl. High spirited, proud. Legit Soprano.

[
ALFRED P. DOOLITTLE] Age 40-70. Slightly alcoholic father of Eliza. Fun loving. Great Character Actor. Baritone.

[
FREDDY EYNSFORD-HILL] Age 20-32. British Upper class. Handsome. Hopeless Romantic type. Tenor.

[
COLONEL PICKERING] Age 40+ British Upper Class. The amiable linguist friend of Professor Higgins. A true gentleman. Baritone.

[
MRS. HIGGINS] 60s - 70’s Female. Mrs. Higgins is a stately lady in her seventies and Professor Henry Higgins' mother. This is a non-singing role in a musical that requires a strong actress who can carry two scenes that are transformational for Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle.

[MRS. PEARCE]: 40’s – 60’s Female. Henry Higgins's head of household. Stern and confident.

THE RAT PACK IS BACK 1st reh 6/6. Runs 6/27–7/14. All roles are available.

Frank Sinatra: 40s. Crooner, jazz singer. Baritone. Actor should resemble “Old Blue Eyes”.

Joey Bishop: 40s. Typical New Yorker. Crooner, jazz singer. Baritone.

Dean Martin: Italian American, 40s. Handsome. Jazz singer. Baritone.

Sammy Davis, Jr.: African American, 40s. Jazz singer. Baritone or tenor.

9 TO 5 Score: Dolly Parton. Book: Patricia Resnick. Dir/Choreo and Mus Dir TBA. 1st reh: 7/24. Runs 7/18-8/4. Co-production with Ogunquit Playhouse (COST, Ogunquit ME). Ogunquit run: 8/22-9/15.

[VIOLET]: 30s to early 40s. Senior office manager at Consolidated Industries. Attractive, smart, efficient. Stands up for what she believes in. Must move well.

[DORALEE]: Late 20s/30s. Hart's secretary. Sexy country gal. Country-style belter. Not seeking a Dolly Parton Impersonation.

[JUDY]: 30s. New girl in the office. Meek and insecure at first, later strong and empowered. Some physical comedy. Power belter.

[FRANKLIN HART, JR.]: Late 30s/40s. President of Consolidated Industries. Smarmy, pompous, male-chauvinist, corporate 1970s boss. Strong baritone.

[ROZ]: Already Cast (Sally Struthers). Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary.

PHANTOM Score: Maury Yeston. Book: Arthur Kopit. Dir/Mus Staging: Dom Ruggiero. Mus Dir TBA. 1st reh 8/7. Runs 8/22-9/8.

ERIK (Phantom) 30’s . A shy gentleness masks the impulsive volatility of this character. A frightened child caught within a man’s bleak world of darkness. Lyric Baritone. Must possess exceptional acting skills as well as ability to sustain a vocally demanding role. Aerial requirements and fight choreography skills needed.

CHRISTINE DAEE’ (20’s) A natural beauty both from within and without. Character must travel the journey from down-to-earth farm girl to mature sophisticated woman of character and demeanor. Lyric Soprano. Must possess exceptional acting skills as well as ability to sustain a vocally demanding role. Many sustained high notes. Classical singing skills required. Role has some very demanding acting moments.

CARRIERE (50’s) Accomplished manager of the Paris opera. Lyric Baritone with extended low range. A grand sophistication and commanding presence is needed for this role. Must be skilled singer as well as accomplished acting for the very demanding second act.

COUNT PHILLIPPE (20’s) Assured youthfulness as is expected from this young nobleman. Patron of the opera and admirer of Christine Daee’. This role is the most “musical theatre” in vocal style but must have a very strong acting ability. This role will be required to perform aerial work and be able to handle fight choreography.Lyric Baritone/2nd Tenor.

CARLOTTA (40’s -50’s) Aging diva who is very full of herself. Spanish accent. Conniving and overly self-indulgent. This role requires a comedic sense combined with a strong mezzo soprano voice. Must be strong actor for the dramatic scenes. This role will have quick changes and be asked to do much physical staging.

ALAIN CHOLET (40’s – 50’s) Newly appointed manager of the Paris Opera and Lover to Carlotta. Pompous in nature and perhaps a bit affected Frenchman who is blindly in love with his mistress. This role requires a large vocal ability as well as a strong sense of comic timing. Tenor.
