Prepare either 1 contemporary monologue (not to exceed 2 minutes total) OR 2 brief, contrasting contemporary monologues (not to exceed 3 minutes total). Performing material from the shows is acceptable.

“A young woman from Israel, Ayelet, reluctantly joins her grandmother on a trip to the United States. Circumstances both absurd and tragic bring Ayelet, who has little command of the English language, together with Josh, a young American man who has little command of romance, on Christmas Eve. Is their inevitable love an accident…or is it destiny, generations in the making?”

Ayelet (“ay-EL-et”) – Female. Thirties. Israeli. Beautiful, lovely, but has lost her smile. Wounded by a break-up last year, but not quick to cry. Practical. Focused. Searching for more from life but afraid to admit it.
Terrence – Male. Thirties. American. Virginia accent. Works as a delivery guy for DHX. Kind of a screw-up, but very well-meaning. Not an idiot, just not worldly. A solid good-guy. Funny without meaning to be.
Josh – Male. Thirties. American. Handsome. Has an innate charming-shy-funny way about him. Tends to talk quickly, words tumbling out when he’s nervous. Used to be an English Lit teacher at Virginia Tech, but quit after his wife died. Though wounded by his loss, he doesn’t like to dwell on the emotion and never becomes overly weepy when talking about her.
Edna – Female. Mid-to-late seventies. Israeli. Ayelet’s grandmother. Loves life. Loves to smile. A ball of vitality, vigor, and energy.

Kendra Ellis-Connor – Female, 40s-50s. Black/African Descent. A professor of psychology and the mother of a teenage son, is recently separated from her White husband; is emotionally raw but trying to keep it together behind a professional façade; she is exceptionally intelligent and self-possessed.
Scott Connor – Male, 40s-50s. White. Kendra’s estranged husband; Scott is an FBI agent of predominantly Irish ancestry; he takes pride in his family’s long tradition of military service; though he can be rigid in his views, he has a warm, sensitive side and is a deeply loving and devoted father; has obvious contained power, but when pushed can explode.
Officer Paul Larkin – Male, 20s-30s. White. An intelligent, congenial young police officer with bold career ambitions who lacks actual life experience; while always trying to do the right thing, he often says the wrong thing at the wrong time; his naivety can appear comic at times.
Officer John Stokes – Male, Mid 40s-60s. Black. A tough, no-nonsense, career police officer who is used to having people listen when he talks; he has paid his dues, knows the rules, and has no hesitation enforcing them.

“He’s young, he’s broke, his landlord’s knocking at the door, and he’s just found out his wife is going to have a baby. To make matters even more desperate, Casey is fired from his gig as an Elvis impersonator in a run-down, small-town Florida bar. When the bar owner brings in a B-level drag show to replace his act, Casey finds that he has a whole lot to learn about show business—and himself.”

Casey/Georgia McBride – Male, 20s. White. A charismatic and good-looking small town high school football star turned Elvis impersonator; hasn’t yet had to grow up and take responsibility for his life; also plays Georgia McBride: a drag queen with rock and roll roots; a force of nature; sexy, flirtatious, and fierce.
Jo – Female, 20s. African-American. Casey’s wife; a hard-headed realist who is prone to being fatalistic; insecure about her appearance, but still a striking and sexy woman.
Jason/Rexy – Male or Non-Binary, 20-30s. Any ethnicity. Jason: Casey and Jo's sweet best friend; also plays Rexy: a bitchy, feisty, sharp-tongued drag queen with a dark past; a trashy girl who fancies herself the most sophisticated lady in the room.
Miss Tracy Mills – Male or Non-Binary, 40s-50s. Any ethnicity. A seasoned drag queen; professional, confident, and very funny; his bitchiness is of the harmless variety and he has a heart of gold; kind, protective, and nurturing to Casey.
Eddie – Male, 50s-60s. Any ethnicity. The easily flustered, hot-headed owner of a struggling dive bar; a bit rough around the edges; still longing for the dimly remembered glory days of high school; later in the play, he becomes an amateur showman who loves the spotlight; cousin to Tracey.
