Ether Dome tells the story of Horace Wells, a young dentist practicing in the 1840s and his student, William Morton. Horace is on the verge of fame. In 1847, he discovered Ether as anesthesia, thereby opening the door to the enormous medical achievements of the 20th and 21st centuries. His experiments using nitrous oxide and ether as anesthesia promise to change medical practice forever, and bring him vast wealth and international acclaim. But when his patent is stolen, it leads him into a downward spiral into madness and tragedy. The tragedy and “society vs. science” / “what does it mean to be human?” aspects of Frankenstein, but following the true story of a man who created a turning point in medical science.
Seeking:
Horace Wells:
Early-mid 30s. Brilliant thinker, inventor, humanist. Horace is sexy, a bit mad, curious about life, and is a loving husband and friend. Charismatic. Horace is a dentist in Hartford, CT who discovers that nitrous oxide (laughing gas) can put a patient to sleep so that painless tooth extractions can be done. He is married to Elizabeth Wells, who is devoted to him. When he loses the recognition for his discovery, he becomes addicted to chloroform, assaults two prostitutes, and commits suicide in a New York City jail. Many believe his story to be the basis for Robert Louis Stevenson’s DR. JEKYLL & MR. HYDE.
