Memory play.
Seeking (all roles are available (i.e. not yet offered and accepted) unless otherwise specified):
Note: All the characters (except Michael) dance, but the piece is not a musical. The dancing comes out of the life of the play. That said, Chris, Gerry and Agnes should be good dancers.
Michael:
38-45. Narrator. Chris’s illegitimate son. Sensitive, yet not at all sentimental. His memories comprise the story of the play. We see the action of the play through his eyes. He is honest, can be charming and has a good sense of humor.
Maggie:
38. Has a wonderful sense of humor, and is a natural comedienne. Has a lot of fun, but with a gentleness; not caustic. Her personality cannot hide deep yearnings. The housekeeper in the family.
Agnes:
35. Knitter who works from home. Rose's special protector. Quiet, somewhat serious and thoughtful. Seems to only come fully alive when dancing. Good dancer.
Chris:
26. Michael's mother. Lovely romantic; still in love with Gerry. Good dancer.
The following roles are cast. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary.
Kate:
CAST. 40. Oldest Mundy sister; very responsible and serious. Schoolteacher. Somewhat stern, but with a heart. Takes care of everyone, and feels the burden of the world on her shoulders. Deeply religious and traditional.
Rose:
CAST. 32. A knitter. Very close to Agnes. “Simple”, but will not accept her sisters’ limitations on her. Strong-willed.
Gerry:
CAST. Welsh, 33. Michael's father. Drifter. Charming, charismatic ne'er-do-well who can dance beautifully.
Jack:
CAST. Mid 50s. Missionary priest; has been sent home from work in a Ugandan leper colony because he is suffering from malaria … and for “going native”. Has lost his way. Yearns for the life he left behind in Africa.
