Breakdown
-John Brennan - Middle-aged, white, educated and articulate death row inmate. He plays chess by mail, and writes a prison newspaper called the Death Row Advocate. 30s-50s.
-Bobby Reyburn - Likeable, illiterate, with a childlike innocence, he is also on death row. A member of the Aryan nation , he is a brutal, racist murdererwho killed because God told him to. 20s-30s.
-Shawna DuChamps - A cynical, yet basically good-hearted prison guard who numbs her sensibilities at a local bar, and provides Brennan with the executed prisoners' final words. 20s-
40s.
-Sam Fried - Intelligent, unafraid New York Times journalist who comes across Brennan's newspaper and sets up a series of visits with the condemnedman. Fried sees the monstrous side to the death row inmates, and challenges Brennan to justify the almost saintly epitaphs he writes. 30s-50s.
