MAPLE AND VINE

Burned out by their hectic, Manhattan lifestyles, Katha and Ryu move to Maple and Vine, a corner of the world where the milkman still makes daily deliveries and the housewives’ smiles are as sweet as their homemade apple pies. This is 1955—perpetually. Reenacting the Fifties with startling authenticity, the community gives up their smart phones for switchboards. But when their civil liberties are in question, what will they sacrifice for happiness?

KATHA, Caucasian female, mid to late 30s. Stressed out by her publishing job and grieving from a recent miscarriage, Katha decides to leave her New York life for the “simpler times” of a 1950’s community. Earnest, open-minded, wears her heart on her sleeve, persuasive.

RYU, Asian American (Japanese) male, mid to late 30s. Katha’s husband. A plastic surgeon, he cares deeply for his wife and, while skeptical, makes the move to the 1950’s community. A caretaker, masculine, intelligent, slightly cynical.

DEAN, Caucasian male, late 30s. A leader in the 1950’s community. Charismatic, dapper, well-intentioned, with secrets.

ELLEN, Caucasian female, late 30s. Dean’s wife, the model 1950’s-woman, appearances and control of the household are high priorities. Also plays JENNA. Katha’s co-worker who wants Katha’s job. Gossipy, power-hungry, feminine, eats a lot of salads.

ROGER, male, mid to late 30s. Dean’s secret lover. Manages a box factory in the 1950’s community. Also plays OMAR. Katha’s co-worker and best friends with Jenna. Gay, urbane, sarcastic, wants Katha’s job.

Enter Kate’s sprawling, rent-controlled apartment on the Upper West Side where four aspiring young novelists meet weekly for a private writing seminar with Leonard, a literary bigwig with a penchant for harsh criticism. Insults fly, the truth stings, and relationships are made and broken in this sharp new comedy as the group learns that the hardest part of writing fiction is facing the facts.

KATE, female, late 20’s to 30’s. Driven, earnest, eager to impress, has been working on the same piece for six years, fabricates a fictitious author to find inner strength.

LEONARD, male, late 40’s to early 60’s. A famous novelist turned master teacher. He hasn’t published in years. Wise, blunt, unconcerned with others’ feelings, with gravitas, sexy, a literary lion.

DOUGLAS, male, late 20’s to 30’s. Comes from a lofty family, has had early success as a writer, slightly pompous, has high expectations for himself.

IZZY, Asian American female, late 20’s to 30’s. Uses her sexuality to get what she wants, aggressive, forward, a feminist, a free spirit.

MARTIN, male, late 20’s to 30’s. Cynical, losing faith in the art if writing, a generally likable guy, unassuming, reluctant to bring his own work to the writers’ group.




BREATH AND IMAGINATION: THE STORY OF ROLAND HAYES

Roland Hayes journeyed from the dirt paths of Georgia to European stages, becoming the first African-American classical vocalist to be heard around the world. With bright yellow shoes given to him by his mother, his Angel Mo’, Roland walked the hard road to stardom. This musical features the soul of spirituals and the grace of classical music to portray one man’s ambition to be an artist.

ANGEL MO’, female, African American, 30’s to 50’s. Appears at multiple ages. Hayes’ mother. A teacher, a kind soul, his spiritual guide.

LITTLE GEM

Party girl Amber feels a rumble in her stomach. Her compulsive mother Lorraine tries her hand at salsa dancing. And her grandmother Kay ‘toys’ with the meaning of pleasure as she looks after her ill husband. Chock full of Dublin slang and hilarity, this play depicts three generations of middle-class Irish women as they strive to piece together their lives and find comfort in the family’s Gems.

Note: All characters have an Irish dialect.

AMBER, female, eighteen/nineteen. Deeply concerned with boys, popularity, her hair, and partying. Grappling with the hurdles of late adolescence. Discovers she’s unexpectedly pregnant. A cheeky teenager, hip, spunky, vibrant.

LORRAINE, female, late 30’s/early 40’s. Emotionally exhausted ever since her father has had a stroke, she’s dealing with anxiety and anger management issues, but is ultimately a good mom, daughter, and person.

KAY, female, early/mid 60’s. The caretaker for her husband after his stroke, she is coping with the sudden absence of a sex life. Working-class, lovable.




ABIGAIL/1702

Whatever happened to Abigail Williams? It’s 1702, a decade after The Crucible’s infamous seductress danced with the devil in Salem. Now, the devil returns for a visit, the blood on the gallows is dry, and Abigail hides behind a changed name in a new town. Reimagining the next chapter of the immortal stage villain who cried “witch!,” this suspenseful drama reveals the accuser’s unforeseen fate.

ABIGAIL WILLIAMS, female, late 20’s. Though for most of the play she goes by the name Ruth Meadow. The young girl who cried “witch” in The Crucible is living in hiding a decade later, haunted by the evil she has created. Works as a nurse and healer.

JOHN BROWN, male, mid 20s. A sailor. Comes to Abigail’s doorstep stricken with plague. Has a dark sexuality, charismatic, with secrets.

REVEREND PARRIS/JUDGE SEWALL/the MAN IN GRAY, male, 40s/50s. Seeking versatile actor to play multiple roles.
