Grusha:
(Female-late 20s) Strong actor/singer with a sense of comedy, as well as the ability to carry the heavier parts of the play. Does the bulk of the singing in the play. Any ethnicity.
Simon/Yussup:
(Male late 20s)- Quirky leading man—endearing and awkward. Doubles as the nasty, embittered man that Grusha is forced to marry. Any ethnicity.
Azdak:
(Male-30s-40s) Strong comedic actor with some singing capability (think Falstaff/Pseudolas). Any ethnicity.
Lavrenti/Shauva:
(Male- late 20s-40s) The sidekicks—needs a quiet, humorous charm. Any ethnicity.
Natella/Aniko:
the Governor's wife (Female 30s-40s) The antagonist of the piece, the role requires a strong comedic actor who can mine the complexity of the character. Any ethnicity.
Prince/Monk/Various Trial Participants:
(Male 30s) Versatile physical comedian who can create multiple delineated characters.
Shalva /Corporal/Duke:
(Male 20s-30s) Physically commanding actor with access to a darker side. Plays both the arrogant lead servant and the evil Corporal. Any ethnicity.
Nina/ Merchant Woman:
(Female 20s-30s) Buxom physical comedienne. Any ethnicity.
Masha/Mother-In-Law/Ludovica:
(Female 20s) Strong physical comedienne, capable of creating multiple delineated characters of a variety of ages. Any ethnicity.
The Duos (Docs/Architects/Musicians/Farmers):
(Males 20s-30s) Two strong comic actors, capable of being physically transformative, who each have some skill playing musical instruments. Any ethnicity.
Ironshirt:
(Male 20s) Commanding physicality. Will be called upon to play the various soldier characters throughout. Any ethnicity.
Child (to play male, 10):
needs strong verbal skills. Any ethnicity.
** All actors will need be comfortable/have some skill dealing with Commedia half-mask. Choral singing and ability to play musical instruments favored.
