It tells the story of Bill and Jim Marcel, brothers and sax players, battling to carve out unique voices amidst the rising musical movements of swing and bop. Driven by their father's failed musical aspirations and their own ambitions, brother betrays brother and each pays a price. Set in electrifying 1940s Los Angeles, the show's action unfolds against the backdrop of World War II, a newly booming Hollywood, and the early stirrings of the civil rights movement."Central Avenue Breakdown" plunges the audience into the sexy Central Avenue jazz scene where artists must choose between fame and authenticity, greed and faith, pride and transformation.

[Martha] African American Female. 35-40. Mother of Bill and Jim. Dutiful wife of Joe. Intensely religious and hopeful, but unsure about uprooting the family to Los Angeles. Stands behind her husband and is a loving supportive mother, but becomes withdrawn and introverted in the face of tragedy. Jennifer Holliday-esque Alto/Belt-to a C.
[Bill] African American Male. 20’s. Older son of Joe and Martha. Tenor saxophone player. Receives approval of his father and of the jazz community by being a traditional, conservative player. Reserved, finds success by following the rules, accomplished and ambitious, likeable but smug at times. R&B tenor-Donny Hathaway type- must sing to a G.
[Jim] African American Male. 20’s. Younger son of Joe and Martha. Wildly creative, tortured Saxophone player who craves the acceptance of his father and becomes jealous of his older brother. loose cannon, volatile-- R&B tenor- Carl Anderson type- must sing to an A.
[Club Owner] African American Male. 30-50’s. Pragmatic yet cantankerous owner of the jazz club where the brothers play. The unofficial mayor of Central Avenue, he has his finger on the pulse of the community and is part hustler, musician, business owner and friend. Engaging and savvy. - Ben Vereen type R & B tenor must sing to a G.
[Cop/Booker/ Producer] Caucasian Male 20s-30s. Patrols Central Avenue and its neighborhood/Gives Bill his first gig at a Hollywood Hills private party and later books him for a tour with a swing band to New York/Produces the record which makes the Marcel brothers famous. Tenor-to G.
[Joe] CAST. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary. African American Male. 35-40. Father of Jim and Bill. Husband of Martha, small town jazz tenor sax player who moves his family to Los Angeles in search of work in the music industry and becomes dejected as he is unable to realize his dream. He is initially hopeful but becomes bitter. Passes his dreams of success in music on to his sons. Charming, boisterous, short fuse. R&B Al Green-esque Tenor/Baritone must sing to a G.

Hollywood starlet and singer fascinated by the African-American jazz scene on Central Avenue. Love interest of Bill and Jim. Spunky hipster, mercurial, adventure seeking but with a conscience.
