Classic comedy of manners takes us into the world of two “women of fashion” who have long lived together on the fringes of upper-class society in Victorian-era Boston. Anna, the older woman, fears losing Claire to a younger paramour -- and yet agrees to host Claire’s seduction of the girl. The seduction goes awry, and the women must face their losses and re-configure their lives. As they articulate their skewed perceptions of life, the language ignites into deliciously vicious banter as we witness their jealousy, fear and desperation for love.
Seeking (all roles are available (i.e. not yet offered and accepted)):
Theatre’s casting note: “All actors should have some classical experience and be expert with language, diction, comedic style.”
Anna:
40-50. Shrewd, calculating, attractive, upper-middle-class woman of fashion. Master of language and wicked banter. Will stop at nothing to hang on to her lover.
Claire:
30-40. Anna’s fickle, sexy companion; not quite ready to settle down. A combination of straight-back social refinement and predatory lust.
Catherine:
Scottish, mid 20s. The doltish yet resourceful, put-upon maid.
