MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING by Shakespeare. Dir: Daniel Talbott. 1st reh: 5/18/11. Runs 6/18-7/17 (Sa/Su matinees only) outside in Central Park.

All ethnicities and ages are strongly encouraged. Actors should have a deep openness to, and love of, classical text in a modern setting, and a willingness to attempt to push beyond a generalized idea of playing Shakespeare and exploring verse and prose text. Please let casting personnel know if you play any instruments, write music and/or sing.

Don Pedro, Prince of Aragon:

Mid 30s-40s. Of the highest social stature in the play. Gracious and poised. Prone to melancholy. Controlling. Good at heart. Soldier. Willing to believe the worst about others, and also willing to put himself on the line in loyalty to his friends. Mischievous, but not cruel.

Benedick:

30s. Of Padua. Lord attending on Don Pedro. Determined to never marry, and to make a show of it. Quick-witted, smart and enjoys an audience. Soldier. Comfortable hiding behind his famously cynical bachelor persona. Capable of falling deeply, undeniably in love.

Claudio:

20s. Of Florence. Lord attending on Don Pedro. Soldier. Best friend to Benedick. Has made a name for himself though his valor in war. Highly impressionable, passionate, bold and headstrong.

Balthasar:

20s+. Singer attending on Don Pedro. Plus to play guitar or uke, or something he can play and sing at the same time.

Don John:

Mid 30s–40s. Bastard brother of Don Pedro. An outsider. Chafes at the terms of his acceptance in society – to be a fake flatterer of his brother. Ready to avenge his outsider status by pulling anyone down to his level in any way he can. Deep sense of loss and betrayal. Destructive anger. A silent watcher, plotting.

Borachio and Conrad:

Many possible ages. Followers of Don John. Loyal to him, and willing to jump into his schemes wholeheartedly. Borachio is the lover of Margaret, Hero’s serving woman.

Leonato:

40s. Governor of Messina. Kind-hearted, fatherly, supportive, noble. Rich and respected.

Hero:

20s. Leonato’s daughter. Intelligent, calm, a young soul. Virtuous and fun-loving.

Antonio:

Could be cross-gender cast. 35+. Leonato's brother, Hero’s uncle. A man/woman of stature, confident.

Margaret:

Any age. Waiting gentlewoman, attending on Hero. Loves a dirty joke. Gets caught up in something more sinister than she would ever initiate on her own.

Ursula:

Any age. Waiting gentlewoman, attending on Hero.

Friar Francis:

Could be cross-gender cast. Convinced of Hero's virtue, he/she convinces the family to fake her death.

Verges:

Any age. The headborough. Dogberry's deputy.

A Sexton:

Any age.

The roles of Beatrice and Dogberry are cast.

THE HELIOTROPE BOUQUET BY SCOTT JOPLIN AND LOUIS CHAUVIN by Eric Overmyer. Dir: Christopher Thomasson. 1st reh: On/about 8/24/11. Runs 9/17-10/2, in rep.

Cast of 11, but at this time seeking only the following:

Scott Joplin:

Late 30s - early 40s, African American. The King of Ragtime, a musical genius. Haunted and afraid of death. At this point, his fame and inspiration are behind him.
Actor must have strong piano skills and the ability to play ragtime music.

Louis Chauvin:

20s, African American. Slick and self-righteous. As quick with his hands on the keys as with his mouth. Musical genius, capable of deep, soulful music when serious. Appears as a ghost to Joplin. Actor must have strong piano skills and the ability to play ragtime music.

SPRING TIDES by Melissa Gawlowski. Dir: Michael Criscuolo. 1st reh: On/about 8/9/11. Runs 9/10-10/1, in rep.

Seeking versatile actors of all ethnicities – who are adept at both comedy and drama and aren’t afraid to make bold choices.

Jane:

30s. Advertising copywriter, led by her imagination. Highly ambitious, but harbors self-doubt. Smart, clever, sarcastic. Hides her vulnerabilities beneath the humor of her words and scripts. Tends to see life in absolutes.

Drew:

30s. Jane’s husband and college sweetheart. Switched careers so that he could move wherever Jane needed; he is devoted to a fault. Approaches most things, good or bad, by being playful and goofy. In Jane’s dream-world, he also appears as a monk, a “greaser”, and her imaginary friend from childhood.

Frankie / Edward:

20s-30s. Frankie: 1950s “greaser”, a character from Jane’s ad who lives in her dream-world. Silly, childish, but incredibly big-hearted. Loves Bernardina more than anything. Edward: Actor who is not very ambitious or charismatic, but has a big crush on Jane.

Bernardina / Meghan:

30s. Bernardina: 15th-Century Spanish nun, another character from Jane’s ads. Considers herself a warrior. Has a soft spot for Frankie. Meghan:Jane and Drew’s college classmate. Pursued her career at the expense of all else. Though her words are blunt and even abrasive, she tempers them with good intentions.
