Breakdown

A NOTE ON STYLE – While the characters are all colorful, the play still comes from a place of sincerity and vulnerability. Sentimentality is to be avoided, but the pain the characters are going through is real.

Penny
(F, mid-20s, any ethnicity) – Nudity required in performance. Attractive, but not physically prepared for a cross country trip. Sardonic humor and reckless impulsiveness mask her deeply fractured insecurity. Clings to vacillating ideas of strength and self-deprication to keep herself from toppling over. Her vulnerability shoots through her in waves and just as quickly becomes repressed. She’s overwhelmingly compelled to search for herself through brash actions.

Annabel
(F, 30s , Asian or Latina) – A lesbian, cross-country cyclist; wife of Rorie. Reasonably fit after training for a cross country bike trip. Believes in the power of love and light, and that changing the world is possible. Sincerely caring and helpful. Also plays Patty, a Williamsburg artisanal cheese maker with a hipster edge, intent on returning to a simpler time using old-timey cheese techniques; and Todd’s mom, a Pennsylvanian she-bear, disgusted by her son’s sniveling hopeless romance.

Rorie
(F, 30s, Black) – A lesbian, cross-country cyclist; wife of Annabel. Reasonably fit after training for a cross country bike trip. Tough and unafraid to be confrontational. A straight-shooter, but not mean, she doesn’t see the point in treading gently around some one else’s foolishness. On a mission to change the world. Also plays Marilyn, a disapproving upper-middle-class Connecticut homeowner who believes in propriety above all else; and Lauralie, a no nonsense Kentucky bartender, bored with self-congratulatory out-of-towners.

Todd
(M, mid-20s, any ethnicity) – Penny’s clingy boyfriend. A hopeless romantic, he believes devotion and love can fix any relationship problem. Sensitive and caring, yet without the physical coordination to have learned to ride a bike. He just wants to feel loved. Increasingly disturbed and desperate when Penny stops returning his calls, he vows to win her back with all the heroism he can muster.

Ryan
(M, 30s, any ethnicity) – Nudity required in performance. A crunchy granola biking instructor. Extremely fit. Believes in leading through motivation and optimism. He secretly has a dark past, but biking has given his life purpose and adventure, and he follows it with religious fervor. Like an overprotective coach, he bears a hefty sense of responsibility for his team. Doesn’t dwell, experiences life and moves on.

Tim Billy
(M, 20s, Black) – A cross-country cyclist. Reasonably fit after training for a cross country bike trip. An easy-going, brightly spirited guy’s guy. He flirts with confidence and wit. Secretly, a little insecure, and becomes distressed if not the one in the driver’s seat of a relationship. Though usually together, being with Penny brings out all frailties.

Man with the Van
(M, 40s, any ethnicity) – A grisly shamanistic porter. Ex-Navy, former roadie, and frequent purveyor of strip clubs. Seems at first gruff and brusque. Probably doesn’t shower or shave any more than a buffalo does. In the end, he reveals a caring heart, though unsentimental. Also plays Gene, a Williamsburg artisanal cheese maker with a hipster edge, intent on returning to a simpler time using old-timey cheese techniques; Stuart, an Ohioan YMCA director that lives with his mother who feels more comfortable avoiding decisiveness just in case; and Carlo, an Arizona county clerk, not unfriendly, but who just wants to make it to quitting time without getting yelled at.
