There is a strong probability that the show will move to New York off-Bway post Berkeley. Actors need to be able to provide their own New York residence.
EMOTIONAL CREATURE deals with many issues that face girls across the globe. Some of the issues dealt with in EMOTIONAL CREATURE are body image, name-calling, anorexia/bulimia, gender stereotypes, diseases, sexuality, sexual orientation, teenage pregnancy and abortion, abuse, sex slavery, rape, female circumcision, education, empowerment, etc.
This is NOT a musical, but a play in which some of the characters sing.

Casting Note: Seeking Six actresses: 18+ to play teen girls 14 – 18. We are assembling a multi-talented ensemble of young women of all ethnicities to represent the Global World of this piece. All need to have great singing voices and dance/move well (a “real” quality vs. musical theatre quality). Seeking at least one actress who can rap. All must be able to play teenagers credibly. They could be poets or stand-up comics, rappers and singers, androgynous to feminine. All must have citizenship or be permanent resident (ie: green card).
Actress One: Asian American.
Actress Two: Latina, Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern, or Native American.
Actress Three*: African.
Actress Four*: African American or African-American/Latina mixed race.
Actress Five and Six: Caucasian.
*Note about Actresses Three and Four: Both should be pretty fabulous musically. One of them must be able to rap. Ideally one of them could have stand up comic skills/experience, be a rapper…etc.

Daniel Cavanaugh
40s, Caucasian male. A Midwestern American businessman making his first trip to China. Attractive, affable and earnest, his straightforward sincerity conceals a darker and more complicated past.
Xu Yan
30s, Asian female. Vice Minister of Culture for the provincial Chinese capital of Guiyang, she has a curt and professional demeanor, as well as a more romantic side. Her strong sexuality never obscures her practical outlook on life. Fluent Mandarin ability required, in speaking and reading (characters or pinyin).
Minister Cai
40s-50s, Asian male. Minister of Culture for Guiyang, he has successfully navigated his way up the Communist Party hierarchy, yet is currently torn between his genuine love for artists and the demands of the new market economy. Fluent Mandarin ability required, in speaking and reading (characters or pinyin).
Peter Timms
30-50. A Caucasian Australian man who has lived and worked in China for many years, and speaks fluent Mandarin. Very winning, charming, but underneath a little desperate. Actor must speak and read fluent Mandarin (either in characters or pinyin form) as well as be able to speak English with a convincing Australian accent.
Zhao
20s-30, Asian female. A Chinese-English translator with a decided weakness for gossip and celebrity. Fluent Mandarin ability required, in speaking and reading (characters or pinyin).
Miss Qian
30s, Asian female, a Chinese-English translator earnestly trying to succeed at her job, but easily flustered. Actor doubles as PROSECUTOR LI, a tough, no-nonsense Chinese judicial official. Also covers XU YAN. Fluent Mandarin ability required, in speaking and reading (characters or pinyin).
Bing
30s-40s, Asian male, a Chinese-English translator overly confident in his language skills who reacts defensively to any criticism. Actor doubles as JUDGE GEMING, Xu’s husband, charismatic, handsome and well-spoken. Fluent Mandarin ability required, in speaking and reading (characters or pinyin).
