BEDBUGS!!! A Sci-Fi Thriller Comedy Rock Musical.

Description: Girl meets bug in this original comic musical in the vein of Rocky Horror and Little Shop with an 80s inspired rock/pop score. An exterminator unleashes her potent insecticide accidentally turning New York’s bedbugs into human size mutant creatures. She must reconcile with her childhood idol Canadian pop singer Dionne Salon in order to overcome her twisted romance and save the world!
 

Bedbugs was a multi-award winning hit of the NYMF festival. A commercial move based on this showcase is intended.  Music from the show can be heard at http://www.bedbugsmusical.com/

Age ranges are secondary to skills.

SEEKING ALL ETHNICITY:

Female 1: Plays the following:

       Carly: 25-40. Leading lady with a strong sense of comedy. Carries the show. Moves well. Star names welcome.  A passionate scientist/exterminator.  She became a research scientist specializing in bedbugs to avenge her Mother’s freak bedbug-related death back in 1989. Vocal: Belt Rock, Range: comfortable high E, hopefully higher.

      Actress briefly plays Young Carly (age 10.)

Female 2: Plays the following:

      Mother: 25-45 (Moves well.)  A 1980’s International Businesswoman.   A workaholic, she is like a demon that cannot be satiated.  Vocal type:  High rock pop mix.  Actress also plays:

       Bedbug 3: a bloodthirsty, cougar-type bedbug

       Joan: a yuppie infested with bedbugs.

       Diner Lady: a “dyed in the wool New Yorker” who’s seen everything. 

Female 3:

      Dawn Getsit:  20-45 (Dances) African American or Latina actress, an attractive confident, often judgmental, news reporter for a major local network. Vocal type: Alto Belt. Actress also plays:

      Bedbug 5: a sexy bedbug

      Consuela: a maid who has lost her job because her rich Upper East Side employers blamed her for their bedbug infestation.  

Male 1:

       Burt: 20-30 (Moves well.) Carly’s adorable gay assistant, fresh out of college, environmentally conscious, bookish, a little nervous and desires a boyfriend very badly. Vocal type: Sweet high pop Tenor

Male 2:

       Dexter Diabolique: 35-65 (Star names welcome.)  The masculine, slick, charming, controlling husband of Canadian Pop sensation Dionne Salon.  He discovered young Dionne at age 12 and made her a worldwide success. He knows he would be nowhere without Dionne. Vocal type: Gritty Rock bari-tenor. Actor also plays:

      Menachem: a Brooklyn Hasidic Jewish man whose family has been stricken with a mean case of bedbugs.   

       Bedbug 4: a clumsy, brutish bedbug

       News Cameraman

Male 3:

       Chad: 20-35  (Dances.)  A vegetarian bisexual Brooklyn hipster.  Extremely nonchalant and lackadaisical.  Vocal type: Light rock pop tenor.  Actor also plays:

       Bedbug 1: a closeted gay bedbug

       “Silent Spring” Backup Dancer:  Must be able to dance 80’s video styles.

Male 4:

Tom Wansett: 25-40 (Moves well.)  A Channel 5 News Reporter.  A slick perfectly coifed yet kind of weasel-ish anchorman, who is secretly in love with his co-anchor Dawn.  Vocal type: Lyric Baritone. Actor also plays:

Richard: a yuppie infested with bedbugs.
Bedbug 2: a closeted gay bedbug, a macho, military-type

Shawn Hazit: the “Label” TV News Reporter, Queeny-gay

“Silent Spring” Backup Dancer:  Must be able to dance 80’s video styles.

Production will also be looking for two understudies to cover roles including:

Male Understudy:

Singer/dancer/actor to cover all men including Cimex.  25-45. Vocal Range: Low B to High B

Female Understudy:

Singer/dancer/actress to cover all women including Dionne Salon. 25-45.  Vocal range: a below middle C to high b flat.
