Seeking (all listed roles are available):

Note: Live dogs will be part of the cast. All cast members must be comfortable handling dogs.

Opal Buloni:

Caucasian girl, age 14 (not seeking adult actors for this role). Opal is mature for her age, and very smart. Has a complicated relationship with her father. Completely in love with her dog, Winn-Dixie, and confides in him. Performer must be comfortable handling dogs. Soprano with a contemporary feel.

Preacher:

Caucasian man, 40s. Opal’s father. Intelligent and non-confrontational. When his wife leaves him, he is deeply hurt, but doesn’t show it – especially to his daughter. Plays the diplomat and gentleman to his congregation, and is able to inspire without fire and brimstone. Baritone.

Gloria Dump:

African American woman, 50s. Has had a hard life; she’s a recovering alcoholic who is ostracized by the town. Has kept her sense of humor. Innately kind. Alto with a blues feel.

Otis:

Caucasian man, 20-30s. Handsome and sweet, but painfully shy. Has spent time in jail. Dreams of being a rock star. A plus if the actor can play guitar. Tenor/baritenor.

Dunlap Dewberry:

Character is a Caucasian boy, age 16 (seeking actor 16 or older who can play 16). Has a sharp sense of humor, and has Southern charm. Tenor.

Jeanne Dewberry:

Caucasian woman, 40s. Southern lady, frayed by the pressure of raising two boys alone. Flirty and gossipy. Alto.

Amanda Wilkinson:

Character is a 16-year old girl, any ethnicity (seeking actor 16 or older who can play 16). Amanda is a know-it-all, snobby and smart. Hides a lot of hurt. Soprano with a contemporary feel.
