Opening: February 21st, 2025

Closing: Mar 13th, 2025

[SANTIAGO]: Male-presenting, Cuban, late 50s, owner of a cigar factory. He has a problem with gambling that has driven a physical and emotional wedge between him and his wife.

[CHECHÉ]: Male-presenting, half-Cuban, half-American, early 40s. Santiago’s half-brother. He is from the North, and since he differs from the others in this way, he is often set against them in arguments. He advocates for mechanization and firing lectors, while the others see hand-rolling and lector-reading as the cornerstones of authentic cigar production. His wife, a Southern belle from Atlanta, left him for a different lector, so Cheché reviles all lectors and especially hates Juan Julian.

[OFELIA]: Female-presenting, Cuban, 50s, Santiago’s wife. Powerful and authoritative, plays a large role in running the factory when her husband’s gambling and drinking get in the way. Nonetheless, she is not at all a stern woman, but rather someone who enjoys fantasizing about a better life and indulging in romantic daydreaming.

[MARELA]: Female-presenting, Cuban, 22, Ofelia and Santiago’s youngest daughter. She is shown throughout the play to be totally consumed by her romantic fantasies as well as a certain youthful naïveté.

She is married to Palomo, but she doesn't really spend much alone time with him outside of the factory, where they both work as cigar rollers. [PALOMO]: Male-presenting, Cuban, 41, Conchita’s husband, as well as a worker at the cigar factory. Though the beginning of the play sees his marriage with Conchita under growing strain, due to his infidelity, he eventually learns to love Conchita again through the jealousy inspired in him by Juan Julian.

[JUAN JULIAN]: Male-presenting, Cuban, 38, the handsome lector from Cuba that is hired to work for the factory. His choice to read the romantic and complex novel Anna Karenina at the factory for his debut, inspires a great degree of personal and interpersonal discord among the factory's workers.

[MICHAEL]: 30s/40s, male-presenting, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. The narrator through whom we see the events of this summer of 1936. Michael is strong, yet wistful. We see the Mundy family through his eyes. Michael has several multi-page monologues and answers as his younger self.

[KATE]: 40, female-presenting, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. Kate is the eldest sister, tight and prim. She is a schoolteacher and contributes the most to the family income. Respected by her sisters, she is clearly the head of the family. She feels that she is the only one who can hold everything together when the world is falling apart, which makes her a much more terrified person than her sisters; that terror is evident in every move she makes.

[MAGGIE]: 38, female-presenting, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. Second eldest and chief homemaker. While Kate works outside the home, Maggie takes care of everything inside the home. Fun-loving, with a serious side, Maggie carries the defusing jokes when things become tense.

[AGNES]: 35, female-presenting, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. Third sister, the quiet one. Agnes is the main sister who looks after Rose. She and Rose take in knitting to help the family supplement their income. Agnes is patient and kind to Rose and is particularly suspicious of Chris’ beau, Gerry.

[ROSE]: 32, female-presenting, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. The fourth sister, Rose has a developmental disability as described in the script. Her main caretaker is Agnes with whom she is particularly close. Rose lives life with an openness that make her vulnerable and sees the world as she finds it. She helps Agnes with the knitting and is a delightful character.

[CHRISTINA]: 26, female-presenting, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. The youngest of the sisters, Chris has a child, Michael, out of wedlock. Her beau has a lust for adventure, quick money and travel and she is easily swept off her feet by his attentions. She is a good mother to young Michael, but her sisters often chide her carefree outlook. (Intimate moments required)

[GERRY]: 33, male-presenting, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. Gerry is the wanderlust who breezes into the Mundy household between adventures. We see him several times during this summer of 1936 and each time he brings tales of his success, his plans for the future and the promise of a bike for young Michael. (Intimate moments required)

[JACK]: 53, male-presenting, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. Uncle Jack, a priest, has spent most of his adult time at a mission in Abyssinia in Africa. Sent home because he could no longer distinguish Catholic ritual from native, he spends the last summer of his life with his five sisters re learning English and presenting a reason why the local priest no longer visits the family.
