Note: ARE YOU THERE MCPHEE is a World Premiere of a new play by John Guare. It is a true ensemble piece with all actors having one primary role and several other supporting characters to play. It takes place in New York City and Nantucket island in the early 1970's. All members of the ensemble must be transformative, versatile with great language skills, timing, humor and style. They will play both characters from the imagination of Mr. Guare and fictionalized characterizations of real figures from Jane Fonda to Walt Disney to Jorge Luis Borges. The roles listed below are the primary role assignments.
Mcphee:
Early to mid 30s. Caucasian male. A hero, a romantic, a lover. Charismatic, imaginative, passionate and appealing. Could be dashing, could be haphazardly charming.
Peter:
Late 20s - early 30s. Caucasian. The perfect, idealized image of a young husband and father. Appears solid, direct, compassionate and reasonable. With a heart condition. Handsome.
Wendy:
Late 20s - early 30s. Caucasian. The perfect, idealized image of a young wife and mother. Supportive, maternal, attractive, well put together.
Schuyler:
40s to 50s. Caucasian. A man with a broken heart who, in the mind of our protagonist is a monster. Must be physically imposing, emotional and driven. Beneath it all though, is a beating, wounded heart.
Bitsy:
40s. Caucasian female. A chain smoking psychotherapist. Schuyler's sister. Has authority and talks the talk but is terrified of her brother.
Andrew:
Mid 30s to early 40s. Caucasian. An attorney. Sharp, attractive, intelligent. Manages everyone and everything around him but misses a detail or two (like his wife's affair with his best friend), or does he? A master manipulator with incredible charm.
Antonia:
30s to early 40s. Caucasian. The idealized woman. Gorgeous, married, cool but hot. Great body, full of promise but never delivers. Also plays Jane Fonda.
Alice:
30s to early 40s. Caucasian. The girl next door. Smart, funny, cynical but sweet. Not gullible but believes in those she loves enough to be hurt again and again.
The cop:
40s to early 50s. The island cop. Weathered but no dope. Physically fit, must have some menace and antipathy for those from “away.” Roy Scheider in jaws, gone just a little bad.
