In their own words, victims of sexual assault in the US Military reveal their stories. A documentary play based on recent interviews with American soldiers who have been sexually assaulted and/or raped by their"fellow" soldiers. Through the eyes of her mother and twin sister, we meet Tina Priest, an American soldier found dead on her Army base in Iraq just weeks after reporting a rape. The play also follows the stories of six additional soldiers as they recount their experiences reporting sexual assault and dealing with the military's subsequent response. A SHOT AWAY

Seeking:

Joy Priest:

Caucasian female; mid-late 40s; strong Texas accent; warm and emotional, yet tired and worn out from dealing with her daughter's death. She is on the verge of giving up trying to find answers. She wears no makeup and appears somewhat older than she is; wears denim shorts and a t-shirt; drinks and chain smokes. Her emotions fluctuate wildly, and she is entertaining and funny one moment, self-possessed and articulate the next, sad and withdrawn at other times.

Danielle Priest (Dani):

Caucasian female; 21; Tina's twin sister; tough exterior; Texas accent; very angry about the military's handling of Tina's alleged rape and subsequent death; very organized and businesslike in her presentation of the facts, in contrast with Joy's emotionality. More detached than her mother in the retelling of Tina’s story and slightly closed off to the audience.

Shirley:

African-American female; late 40s; veteran, Army; grew up in Harlem; very animated personality; kind-hearted; principled; optimistic; becomes highly emotional when discussing the details of her assault.

Mar:

Caucasian female (blonde preferred); late 20s; veteran, Marines; very feminine and attractive; well-dressed, in business clothing; very animated and social while telling her story; comes across as capable, well-spoken and intelligent.

Athena:

Caucasian female; mid 20s; veteran, Coast Guard; very thin; long, straight black hair that falls over her face as she speaks; reserved personality; quiet, even voice; gives off a calm, inner strength; has brought documents with her to the interview and reads from them slowly and methodically at times.

KC:

Caucasian female; mid-late 30s; veteran, Army; wears no makeup; very athletic; tough and masculine exterior yet wholly approachable and open; mid-western accent.

Amando:

Filipino male; late 30s; veteran, Marines; soft-spoken and thoughtful; serious demeanor.
