ATTN: RAISIN, Role of ____/ AEA self submission
Submissions received after September 1st will not be considered.
NOTE: All roles are African-American with the exception of Karl Lindner. This will be a non-traditional, non-realistic ensemble production.
Walter Lee Younger:
(African American Male, mid 30s). Intense, inclined to quick nervous movements and erratic speech habits. Impulsive and slightly impetuous, and always in his voice there is a quality of indictment.
Lena “Mama” Younger:
(African American Female, 50s-60s). Strong matriarch and devoutly religious. She carries herself as if bearing a basket or a vessel upon her head. Her speech on the other hand, is as careless as her carriage is precise. Open to any physical type; could also be younger and play older.
Ruth Younger:
(African American Female, 30). It is apparent that life has been little that she expected, and disappointment in her marriage and life has already begun to weigh heavy on her.
Beneatha Younger:
(African American Female, 20). As intense as her brother Walter. Intellectual. Her speech is a mixture of many things; education has permeated her sense of English—but not altogether, because over all of it is a soft slurring, the decided influence of the Southside.
Joseph Asagai:
(African American Male, early 20s). Nigerian, of the Yoruba tribe. An intellectual; just returned from studying in Canada. Ambitious, optimistic dreamer. This track will most likely also play George Murchinson: Shallow, rich, ambitious, good looking and snobbish.
Travis Younger:
(African American Male, 10). Son to Walter and Ruth. A sturdy, handsome little boy. Must convincingly play 10 or 11 years old.
Mrs. Johnson:
(African American Female, 30-60). Squeaky and wide-eyed. This is a woman who decided long ago to be enthusiastic about everything in her life and she is inclined to wave her wrist vigorously at the height of her exclamatory comments.
Karl Lindner:
(Caucasian Male, late 30s-40s). Quiet looking. He is a gentle man; thoughtful and somewhat labored in his manner.
Bobo:
(African American Male, mid 30s). Frightened and haunted. May possibly cover Asagai or Murchinson.
