Breakdown
WOMEN
1. Helena: Taller of the two girls. She is described as a ‘Painted Maypole’. She is well educated. Sensitive but driven. Playing age
mid 20’s. Physical actor with a good sense of comedy. She is deeply and desperately in love with Demetrius.
Snug: Plays the Lion in the play. As the name suggests, compact, close fitting. She is a joiner, a craftswomen. Timid and not a
natural performer.
2. Hermia: Shorter of the two girls. She is described as small and ‘though she be but little she is fierce’. Passionate, feisty,
intelligent and maybe a little spoilt. She is not afraid to stand up to what she believes is right. Same age as Helena. In love with Lysander.
Robin Starveling: Plays Thisbe’s Mother and Moonshine in the play. As the name suggests, thin, feeble. She is a tailor/dressmaker.
3. Hippolyta: Queen of the Amazons. Exotic, physical, strong, a warrior. Physically striking. Playing age mid 30’s.
Titania: Queen of the fairies. The immortal version of Hippolyta. An actor with
real physical presence and sensuality, and not afraid to use it! Excellent physicality.
4. Puck/Philostrate:
This is open to all sorts of interpretations. Our Puck is the conductor of the piece, the catalyst and chief meddler.
Ideally we are looking to make this character asexual. Full of energy and maybe someone with circus skills. Great with
verse and a versatile actor. A naughty child, petulant teenager, mischievous. Vocally deft, physically interesting. A real character. Physically compact. Ageless. Could be anything from
20-40. A one off. A sense of danger. Anarchic.
MEN
5. Demetrius: Playing age mid 20’s. In love with Hermia. As with the girls we are looking for a physical actor with a good sense of comedy. Demetrius is well educated and well appointed within the society of the play. He is Egeus’s choice. Because of the period in which we are setting the play he would have undergone some military training duringchis late teens early 20’s. He may well be still involved with the military.
Tom Snout: Plays the wall in the play. A tinker, (mending and working with metal objects). A craftsman, working class.
6. Lysander: Playing age mid/late 20’s. Much like Demetrius. Also has a military background. In love with Hermia.
Francis Flute: Plays Thisbe in the play. Not at all happy to be playing in ‘drag’. A bellows mender; (repairing church
organs). Has a light treble voice.
7. Bottom: A comic tour-de-force. Physically large, (tall and or fat). We can of course pad the actor so I am not
suggesting we should only look for fat actors! Playing age 30-50. He thinks he is the best actor in the world. Pushy,
confident, larger than life. He loves the sound of his own voice. Able to physically transform himself into a donkey! Someone who is very much at home with comedy.
8. Peter Quince: The director of the play. Playing age 40-60. A carpenter. Works hard to keep control of the rest of the
‘mechanicals’ but doesn’t have a natural authority. Maybe a retired General. Kindly.
Egeus: Hermia’s father. A retired General? Well appointed and known to Theseus and the court. Hard and
immoveable. Cruel. Not prepared to compromise. Playing age 40-60.
9. Theseus: The ‘Duke’. A well known and respected military general, in active service. A war hero. Well read,
intelligent, respected. Playing age 30-50. Commands respect. A good listener and sensitive.
Oberon: The King of the fairies. He is dominating and strong. Controlling. Playing age 30-50. In love with Titania.
Jealous. Needs to be a very physical actor with a sense of danger.
