BREAKDOWN

A CHRISTMAS STORY

A CHRISTMAS STORY, The Musical is set in Indiana in November and December, 1940. The Depression is just ending, and Christmas is approaching! Ralphie, our 9 year old hero, dreams of getting an air rifle for Christmas-- and not just any air rifle, but the Red Ryder Carbine Action BB Gun!

NOTE: The children carry a HUGE part of a HUGE production. Seeking boys and girls with natural star quality. BOYS MUST HAVE UNCHANGED voices.

SEEKING:

[JEAN SHEPHERD] Male, 50s-60s, the narrator (Ralphie is him as a boy) doubles as several roles in and out of the story as well. Midwestern, charming, warm, excellent story teller. And again, warm. Not a singing role.

[MOTHER] 20s-30s. Pretty, warm, funny, wonderful expressive singer, contemporary mid-range mix-belt, with some soprano. A great singer. Subtle real, genuine and truthful sense of humor.

[THE OLD MAN] 30s-40s. Genius comic who sings. Uptight, fuss-budget, flawed. Humorously “terrifying” dad with a heart somewhere. Range is high baritone.

[RALPHIE] Principal. Caucasian. Age: 9-13 to play 9-10. Under 5 feet tall. A regular boy. Appealing but not necessarily a handsome boy. Can have some extra weight on him. Strong presence. Not “show-bizzy”. A great strong singing voice, high belter voice must be UNCHANGED. A clear singer with a great range. Range is low F# to high D. Tap dancing is a plus. Will be casting an alternate as well.

[RANDY] Principal. Caucasian 9-10 to play about 7-8. Must be smaller than RALPHIE. 4’6” or smaller. CUTE and FUNNY little boy. FUNNY in the sense that he is awkward and off-beat. Has a lot of strong concentration but, like Ralphie, not show-bizzy. Vocally, voice is unchanged and hight belter low F# to high C#. Able to tap dance. Also seeking alternate/understudy.
