BoHo Theatre is thrilled to announce plans for its upcoming 2017 season. Building on its rich, 13-year history, BoHo continues to bring an eclectic mix of musicals, dramas, and classic plays to Chicago stages focusing on emotional human relationships. The company is dedicated to being an incubator for up-and-coming Chicago talent by creating safe, supportive artistic environments for our artists to experiment and grow.

With these goals in mind, BoHo's 2017 season will feature the subversive satire musical Urinetown, the Pulitzer Prize-nominated drama Three Days of Rain, and the tragic love story Marie Christine.

THE SEASON IN DEPTH:

URINETOWN
Music by Mark Hollmann, Book by Greg Kotis, and lyrics by Hollman & Kotis
February 4 - March 26, 2017 at the Stage 773

In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides that he's had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! At a time when private companies are raising prices on life-saving medicines like EpiPens and faith in elected officials is at historic lows, Urinetown challenges both institutions with irreverently humorous satire.

THREE DAYS OF RAIN
By Richard Greenberg
May 18 - July 2, 2017 at the Heartland Studio

Walker Janeway returns to New York a year after his father's funeral. He takes up residence in an abandoned loft where, thirty-five years earlier, his architect father and his father's business partner Theo had designed their greatest house. Joined by his sister, Nan, and Theo's son, Pip, tempers clash over ownership and the fate of the famous house. Walker has found his father's old journal, which he thinks contains evidence that Theo stole his father's ideas. But the truth of the past is much different than the three of them realize. Shifting from present to past, Three Days of Rain examines the depth of family secrets and how children eventually come to embody their parents.

MARIE CHRISTINE
Words and music by Michael John LaChiusa
Fall 2017 (dates TBD)

Set in the twilight years of the 19th century, this dark musical chronicles the journey of Marie Christine, a racially mixed woman imprisoned without a trial to face death. From her jail cell, she recounts her journey from a genteel life of privilege in New Orleans Creole society through love, betrayal, and incomprehensible vengeance, to her final tragic fate. Inspired by the Medea myth, this tale of dark magic and raw emotion is loosely based on the life of real-life voodoo practitioner Marie Laveau. Penned by musical writer Michael John LaChiusa (The Wild Party, Hello Again, Bernarda Alba), the San Francisco Examiner hailed Marie Christine as "a major work by one of the most highly regarded new serious songwriters for the stage."
