On the heels of her recent critically acclaimed show PORTRAITS (which premiered last December in the Stephen Hanks produced Metropolitan Room series NEW YORK CABARET'S GREATEST HITS and then enjoyed a three-show run at Don't Tell Mama), two-time MAC Award- winner Meg Flather will launch a three-show run of her new show CARLY & ME at Don't Tell Mama on July 31 at 4 pm (with additional shows on August 28 at 4 pm and September 27 at 7 pm). Flather's band features Paul Greenwood on piano and John Mettam on guitar and drums. Multiple award-winning Lennie Watts is the director. Don't Tell Mama is located at 343 West 46th Street. The cover for this show is $20 ($15 for MAC Members) with a 2-drink minimum. Reservations can be made here.
"Carly," of course, is Carly Simon, who amassed 24 Billboard Hot 100 charting singles, won two Grammy Awards, became the first artist in history to win a Grammy, Golden Globe, and Academy Award for a song composed as well as performed by a single artist (for the 1988 hit "Let the River Run" from the film Working Girl), and is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Flather's show will explore the legendary singer/songwriter's hits (as well as Simon's "misses") and how Simon influenced Flather's songwriting. "This show will be my personal thank you from one songwriter to another," says Flather, who will also perform some of her own original songs in the show. After Flather performed a trial run of the show at Don't Tell Mama last year, BistroAwards.com reviewer Gerry Geddes wrote: "Flather's wit, charm and singing are better than ever . . . Her choices for Carly Simon material are often pleasantly unexpected."
TheaterScene.net reviewer John Hoglund recently praised Flather for her " . . . knife-edged professionalism that is missing in many cabaret acts today . . . Flather is dynamic; a terrific mix of intelligence and high energy wackiness who can also break your heart with a gut-wrenching ballad."
Meg Flather, who Back Stage Editor Bob Harrington once wrote: " . . . has one of those one-in-a-million voices," is a Backstage Bistro and MAC Award-winning performer (Hanson Award in 2014, "Best Original Song" in 2016), and as a singer/songwriter has released six CDs of her original music (all of which are available on iTunes). Meg has written and recorded songs for independent films, Off Broadway shows, and on behalf of Alzheimer's, Autism and suicide-prevention awareness. She has also been a featured performer for The Gay Men's Health Crisis at New York's historic Webster Hall, the Vermont Film Festival, and the Tribeca Film and Family Festival. In December 2013, Meg performed her music to benefit the victims of Typhoon Yolanda at the Philippine Consulate. After years serving as a home shopping brand ambassador who had grown sales for PERLIER on TSC, Canada, Aloette on Shop NBC, PRAI on TVSN, Australia, StriVectin on QVC and TSC, Canada, in 2014, Meg released her autobiography, Home Shopping Diva . . . Lessons, Lyrics and Lipstick.
