It has been 8 years since legendary rock band Queen has toured in the United States, however, Thursday morning they delighted fans with the announcement of a North American tour this summer. The surviving members of Queen, Brian May and Roger Taylor, were joined by Adam Lambert on Good Morning America for the reveal of this massive event. The 19-date tour will launch in Chicago on June 19th and will come to a close a month later near Washington D.C. It has been hinted that success of this tour will determine a possible extension into a world tour.

Queen was first formed in 1971 by Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon. After signing a record deal in 1973, the band quickly began experiencing overwhelming success and gained fans by the millions. With 18 number one albums, 18 number one singles, 10 number one DVDs, and roughly 300 million albums sold worldwide, Queen has easily become one of the best-selling and most influential bands bands of all time.

Unfortunately, tragedy struck the band in 1991. Only a day after frontman Freddie Mercury's announcement to the world that he was suffering from AIDS, he died of complications from the disease. To date, he remains as the most high profile loss from the illness.

While Mercury's death brought the end of an era, it was by no means the end of Queen. In 2001, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 2005, Brian May and Roger Taylor brought Queen back into the touring circuit.

Fast forward four years, and Queen is performing on stage with Adam Lambert on American Idol Season 8. Since then, all three have been in close contact and have performed together in various shows including the 2013 iHeartRadio Music Festival. Critics have raved over their joint efforts saying that "Freddie Mercury's king-sized songwriting makes for a perfect vessel for Lambert's operatic wail" (Billboard). It was an easy and exciting decision for the band to bring on Lambert for a full tour this upcoming summer.

Lambert has expressed his gratitude for being able to honor Freddie Mercury in such a manner by saying, "He's a personal hero of mine, and I am deeply grateful for the chance to sing such powerful music for fans of this legendary band. I know this tour will be a huge milestone for me, and with the support of Brian, Roger and the rest of the band, I feel like magic will be on display."
