Liyana Roger Ross Williams Prudence Mabhena is a disabled singer-songwriter based in Zimbabwe who, with the help of Liyana, her all-handicap band, challenges adversities to survive, and encourages others to achieve. Roger Ross Williams won the 2010 Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Form) for 'Music by Prudence', the story of Prudence Mabhena's life. Roger Ross Williams is now the first African American director to ever win an Academy Award in his category of Documentary Shorts, and Roger Ross Williams is also the first ever African American director to win an Academy Award for directing and producing a film, short or feature.
As a television news and documentary director and producer, Roger Ross Williams has worked for ABC News, NBC News, MSNBC, BBC, CNN and PBS. He has also produced entertainment shows for ABC, CBS, Comedy Central, Food Network, Sundance Channel, TLC, VH1 and Michael Moore's Emmy Award winning series TV Nation. Roger has directed prime-time reality shows for ABC and CBS; produced a documentary series for Discovery Networks; and produced a lifestyle series for Scripts Networks. He has won numerous awards including a NAMIC Vision Award for his television special Moroccan Style, and the National Headliner for Best Human Interest Feature for his documentary New York Underground.
Prudence Mabhena arrives in New York City's Times Square on Sunday, May 9, 2010. 'Music by Prudence' will have a New York premiere screening on Monday, May 10, 2010. The film will then have an international airing on HBO2 beginning Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 8 ET/7 CT (check your cable listings for rebroadcast times). Prudence Mabhena will be in the United States until the end of June 2010.
