The Nashville Opera is leading the charge with the 2017 season opener of "Three Way" -- a slightly naughty but highly important opera about all types of relationships and the people/motives behind their actions.
In "Three Way" we are introduced to 3 acts, each showing a different relationship want/need -- the first is an "Android relationship", a comment on the way technology plays important roles in how we communicate with each other. The second act is about a dominatrix and her client, a nasty businessman with power issues. And the third act is, in fact, about multiple partners-- exploring the needs and wants behind "non-traditional" relationships.
"Three Way" is important bc this is the only opera that I'm aware of in which WOMEN are in control of the relationships. Opera's have long been using women as a vehicle for plot development-- victims of rape, violence or neglect.
All thee acts in "Three Way" showcase strong women. Something I believe the opera (and world) need more of.
