How did President Paul Ralston get infected with HIV? That's the urgent challenge facing ace medical detective DR. Martin Riker in the mystery novel, "The President Has AIDS", by Dr. Leslie Norins, just published by Medvostat LLC. The publisher states the book's plot involving the Commander in Chief's development of AIDS is unprecedented. National security and political stability are both at risk.

Dr. Riker, ex-CDC and Army. Is summoned by White House insiders to find how and where POTUS became infected. Using a cover story, he evaluates four possibilities: enemy plot, blood transfusion, dirty drug needle, or extramarital sex. To follow leads he interrogates aides, visits the bars of Washington, and travels to Tokyo and Maine.

In addition to his personal "shoe leather" work, Dr. Riker is surprised to find that there are ways to obtain identities of people with HIV. These include supposedly confidential reports of positive HIV blood test results, AIDS diagnoses, public health clinic visits, sexual contact tracing, and pharmacy records of people taking anti-retroviral drugs.

In the background the President's staff wrestle with how much information, if any, about the infection should be made public. Some advise total secrecy; others suggest the American people would be understanding if the infection was accidental, such as through a contaminated blood transfusion. All agree that finding the virus came from extramarital sex with a prostitute-of either sex-would be devastating.

A murder, a suicide, and planting of false evidence heighten the tension. But Dr. Riker presses on to find the astounding and unexpected answer. The book ends just after President Ralston decides whether to inform the American people of his AIDS.

Leslie Norins, M.D., Ph.D., the author, brings 50 years of medical research and medical publishing experience to this book. He is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and Duke University Medical School. He was also an immunology fellow of Sir Macfarlane Burnet, Nobel prize winner. Early in his career he directed the Venereal Disease Research Laboratory at the Centers for disease control and Prevention (CDC).

"The President Has AIDS", by Leslie C. Norins, MD is published by Medvostat LLC, and is available at Amazon.com or bookstores. Price $14.95 paperback and $9.95 Kindle. ISBN 978-0692758007.
