Is it possible that a bioengineered virus could be created and used for hostile intent one day? According to author L.A. Hollis, the potential of a pandemic is closer than we think.

Hollis presents the framework for this scenario in her new novel "Blood Virus: A Pandemic by Design", urging readers to consider the consequences of a world in which individuals have the ability to create viruses and infect certain groups as a means of warfare and terrorism.

"No one was discussing the possibility of an ethno-specific virus being used to wipe out certain people," Hollis said. "Given the state of our world and technology, this is a conversation worth having because the science is plausible."

A pharmaceutical representative for over 20 years, Hollis extensively researched weapon history and bioengineered viruses to create a fictional virus in her novel, stating that as early as 1970 the United States and several other countries were already working on bioweapons of their own.

"With so much discussion about viruses both around the world and at home, society must be prepared to handle a mass outbreak if one were caused by a manmade virus," Hollis said. "As traditional warfare methods change, the possibility of bioweapons becoming a real threat is much greater than ever."
