ALBUQUERQUE--Thomas Moore, the best-selling author of books on spirituality and relationships, including the internationally translated Care of the Soul, will be in Albuquerque talking about his new book, A Religion of One's Own, on January 21, at the Center for Spiritual Living.
Bookworks is partnering with the Center for Spiritual Living to host Mr. Moore, whose new book will be published by Penguin Books in January 2014. "I am deeply inspired by Thomas Moore and his thoughts on the soul's great. The Albuquerque Center for Spiritual Living is so very pleased to host this event with Bookworks," says Reverend Andrew Groves of the Center for Spiritual Living.
Groves will introduce Moore at a free event at the Center for Spiritual Living at 2801 Louisiana Blvd NE. Moore's new book and backlist titles will be for sale at the event, and a portion of proceeds will be donated back to the Center for Spiritual Living. Doors open at 6 and Mr. Moore's talk starts at 7pm, with a book signing to follow.
Moore's new book, A Religion of One's Own, follows his quest for contemplative living, advocating individuals create their own course of spirituality, especially if organized religion has made them feel disillusioned. Moore contests that "something essential" is missing from modern life, and that those who have turned away from religious institutions still need spirituality. Moore explores the myriad possibilities of creating a personal spiritual style, either inside or outside formal religion.
A follow-up to Moore's best-selling Care of the Soul, first published more than 20 years ago, this new book continues to expand on topics of contemplative living Moore first began exploring after he left twelve years in a monastery. He shares stories of seekers creating their own paths to spirituality, including a former football player now on a spiritual quest with the Pueblo Indians, a friend who makes a meditative practice of floral arrangements, and a well-known classical pianist whose audiences sometimes describe having a mystical experience while listening to her performances. Moore weaves their experiences with the wisdom of philosophers, writers, and artists who have rejected materialism and infused their secular lives with transcendence.
Thomas Moore was a monk for twelve years, a musician, a university professor, and a psychotherapist. He writes regularly for Psychology Today and The Huffington Post among other publications. He lectures widely on holistic medicine, spirituality, psychotherapy, and the arts and is the author of eighteen previous books, including Care of the Soul, Soul Mates, and Dark Nights of the Soul. He lives in New Hampshire.
