The 1950s saw the emergence of the American counterculture, the progenitors of the hippies of the 1960s and 70s, who would see the liberation of the nation and the massive transformation of its social mores and traditions. Amidst prudishness and conformity, beneath the shadow of the Cold War and McCarthyism, were souls who pined for change, the beatniks and bohemians. It is in this time of change that author Scott Malcolm Leslie's existential love story plays out, following a vagabond who ends up in the epicenter of this explosion of creativity and social metamorphosis in his search for Beautiful Seclusion.

Based in the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 1953, Beautiful Seclusion chronicles the life of Adam Hillcrest. Adam is a troubled soul and hopeless romantic who is attempting to redefine himself after some radical changes in his life. After Adam's wife divorces him, he sells everything he owns and moves to New York with nothing more than a guitar, a box of books, and a duffel bag full of clothes. He finds himself in the center of the rising bohemian movement taking place in Greenwich Village. In the midst of a creative explosion of art, literature, and music, Adam finds himself participating directly in the cultural revolution that would end up changing the face of American society forever.

Beautiful Seclusion is a touching tale of personal and societal transformation, depicting the freedom attained by discarding inhibition, preconception, and constraints to embrace creativity, imagination and change. Its narrative shows how a seemingly hopeless wanderer finds love after loss and creates a new life for himself in a time and place where a genuine American counterculture is born.

Leslie tells a moving tale that gives readers a snapshot of a pivotal moment in history and those at its forefront: the bohemians and beatniks, the forebears of the hippies of the 60s, all of whom would breathe new life to a nation's stratified monochromatic culture. It is this new life that the protagonist seeks, which is something that will resonate with readers on a deeply emotional level, the search for freedom, for Beautiful Seclusion.
