INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT THOMAS C. SHORT GRANTS LOCAL ONE STRIKE AUTHORIZATION
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
President Claffey is reporting as of 7:30 p.m. today, November 8, 2007, that based upon the last offer of the League of American Theatres and Producers, International President Thomas C. Short has granted strike authorization to Local One.
The International President will advise President Claffey as to the time and date when the strike will begin.
Please continue to check the web site and the hotline at 646-459-1916 for any additional updates on how to proceed.
The strike has BEEN authorized...it's just a matter of them deciding to actually do it or not.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."
--Aristotle
Previously, the Local One membership authorized their executives to call a strike if deemed necessary. The catch on this was to be legal, the IATSE International had to authorize it as well.
This is the Intertnational (parent) union office authorizing a strike, time frame TBD.

If the six shows you're seeing are the ones listed in your profile you're in a slight bit of luck. The Glorious Ones, Pumpgirl, and Pygmalion are produced by non-profits so are not technically effected by the strike. Neither is Young Frankenstein. Cyrano and Little Mermaid would be though.
Even though they are produced by those theatres wouldn't ALL stagehands go on strike? I got the impression that if there was a lockout then those certain shows wouldnt be effected but if there is a strike I'm pretty sure they would be. Correct me if I'm wrong.
even if the stagehands are IATSE, it's not their contract so guessing that they are not legally able to go on strike. Much like with the WGA strike, other unions specifically forbid their members from striking while they are required to report to work.
-Politics is like driving. To go backward, put it in R. To go forward, put it in D.
I'm just really sorry that it got to this point for the stagehands - its too bad they couldnt come to an amicable agreement without a strike being necessary.

We must have different Gods. My God said "do to others what you would have them do to you". Your God seems to have said "My Way or the Highway".
oy, that wouldn't be fun, I'm going into the city just to see 2 shows this weekend, I won't complain though...me and everyone else really. hope it works out and there isnt a strike after all- for some reason i think there wont be a strike, and even if there is, it might only be for a few days?

Claffey has been saying for quite some time that Dec 1st would be when they would stop working without a contract and there are still talks on the 9th scheduled.
yes. I think i'm going to go cry in my room now. I have Spring Awakening tix for Dec. 9th.. (P.S, I know that show is hated here. I couldn't care less. I'm DYING to see it.)
I'm going to look to the optimist within and go on to believe that things will be resolved quickly and swiftly, so that we can go on enjoying the season. Plus, y'know, I still have FARNSWORTH and ROCK 'n' ROLL and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN to enjoy before the Nederlander Organization takes a hold of my B'way schedule (with CYRANo at the Rodgers, LION KING at the Minskoff and MERMAID at the Lunt). Here's to a painless meeting tomorrow!
Best, - Mike

at 3:30 the union gave the league its final offer. at 7pm the league came back with a counter offer that was, according to someone in the room, "total bullsh*t". Tom short told the league that negotiations were over. cancelled tomorrows meeting and went into an office and signed the IA authorization to strike. the union is meeting tomorrow to pick a day for the strike. We have been told its going to be either tomorrow or monday. we all cleared our personal stuff out tonight.
don't quote me on this, but i've heard nederlander stage hands will strike as well even though they are not part of this dispute. in solidarity is what i've been hearing from nederlander workers.
