News on RENT movie?
Posted: 3/14/04 at 06:01pm
Ok, I'm new here, so I don't know how many times this has already been discussed, if any. But, I've read so many different rumors! Anyone have any recent or concrete information on the film production of Rent? I've heard everything from Spike Lee to Baz Lurhman for the director...Baz would be AWESOME!!!! I'm so excited about the idea of a movie for this...as well as Phantom, Hairspray, The Producers, Hunchback, etc.

There have been countless rumors. I'm not going to believe anything until someone officially announces it.

I can't stand the idea of a RENT movie- especially if they get Justin Timberlake to play Roger. This sickens me.

I don't believe this is being pursued at the time.

Since Baz seems to think that the concept of Rent was stolen from his intitial foray into a 1957-era Bohème, I'd kind of doubt he'd be involved with this.

Dan Kelly: Any truth at all to the rumors about you bringing Rent to the screen?

Baz Luhrmann: No, no. no. They've asked me to do all those musicals. Chicago they've asked me to do. You know, Phantom. I have respect for all those works. In fact, when I was doing Romeo + Juliet, they asked me would I bring Rent to the big screen. But, Rent, the play, was entirely based on my production of La Boheme, you know? And to be honest with you, I feel there are others who can do that job well, but to me I'm all about original work. So, no, I'm not going to do that production.

The day RENT is turned into a movie is the day I lose all faith in the producers.

i read something in entertainment weekly a while ago about making a tv movie out of it. if a movie is to be made it sure as hell shouldnt be aired on prime time or anything, think of how muched they'd have to water it down. i dont disagree with the idea of making a film, because id love for it to reach that wide of an audience, but i can see why you wouldnt want it to. if hollywood turns it into an extended version of trl, posing as some sort of pop culture art film, that would truly make me sick, especially if it would in any way involve justin whats-his-face.

I read in an article with britney murphy a WHILE ago when they scraped the idea that she said she was cast as Mimi in the film version of rent. I read it with my own 2 eyes and threw the mag in horror. I will have to find the article. I give it to her she can sing and i LOVED her as an actress before she turned crackish but as Mimi??? maybe maureen, so not a mimi to me.

Last I heard from an actual source was that once Spike Lee's project stopped that the property was essentially out of development and just sitting around waiting for someone to feel like doing something with it.

If Baz truly believes Rent was based on his production of La Boheme (the link to the interview does not work), then it sounds like he's never seen Rent. Nothing in Rent resembles Baz's Boheme except that the cast is younger and prettier than previous productions of Boheme and both are based on the same story. That's it.

he truly belives that. I have read him saying it more then once. I think it is hilarious to tell you the truth.

That's the same URL I posted.

And yeah, I agree. Much as I like his (non-film) work.

i also got that impression from his quote. i really wouldnt like for baz to direct, his directing is just so spastic and it would be hard enough for rent to work as a film as it is without him spinning the camera around so many times that the audience wants to vomit

Just thought I would share this link. The movie production must be active if they have a link for it on IMDb.com.

If they do make this, I hope they don't use much of the original cast, because they would look too old on screen.

(FYI: This thread just mysteriously popped up on the first page...I didn't bump it up)

Maybe they should make ANOTHER movie! Using the children of the original stars. And maybe we can just keep bumping this thread so it stays up top. Time warps are fun.

I loved the Lifetime remake with Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, Will Smith, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Rihanna and Chris Brown. Watched it again a week ago on DVD. So refreshing seeing an all-black reinterpretation.

BrodyFosse, I thought Sacha Baron Cohen was playing Tom Collins in that not actually all black version?
