I'd love to see him in a great, classic musical theatre role (which, as much as I love PASSION, Giorgio just isn't that). I'm not sure if he can handle the musical complexity of the part, but I'd love to see him tackle Georges Seurat in SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE...and he can keep that hot beard.
And I know it's overdone but he'd be fantastic as Nathan in GUYS & DOLLS.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
While he may have an adequate voice for one or two show concerts, it remains to be seen whether he has the voice for eight shows a week. Given his busy film career, he'd probably look at a musical with a limited run....or an established/long running show that wouldn't mind having him for 8 weeks or so. Hmmm?
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
So now I guess we're all officially sad he dropped out of Into the Woods?
I think he would be terrific as Joe Hardy in Damn Yankees! Remember that movie remake that was supposed to be happening recently? He might be a good Brad in Rocky Horror as well.
"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."
"Who was he cast as in Into The Woods? Forgive my ignorance. "
He was to play Cinderella's Prince and Chris Pine was to play Rapunzel's. When Jake Gyllenhaal left due to a scheduling conflict (I believe with the film Nightcrawler), Chris was moved up and they hired Billy Magnusson to replace him.

Definitely agree with whomever suggested Bobby in COMPANY. If only there were a production right now... he's the perfect age for the role. I'd love to see Jake Gyllenhaal tackle that material.
I would love to see him take a stab at Bobby (whatever happened to that gay Company? Did anything come of that reading?) or maybe Guido Contini. I would see him do Floyd Collins, as well. In addition to the previously mentioned roles, of course.
