From the announcement in the NY Times:

"Nothing was rewritten, but things were cut and restructured,” Mr. Doyle said recently. “There aren’t as many big dance numbers, but it gets to the heart of things very well."

Wow, I am surprised that Jennifer Hudson is making her Broadway debut not playing the lead, good for her, that is very respectable. Is this an open-ended run?

"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

Cynthia Erivo looks (and sounds) stunning in the new press material.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Can they have Shug sing I'm Here?

Well I'm excited.

I think I'm in the minority but I really liked the show. I would definitely see it again.

And I love J-Hud too.

I'm not familiar with Cynthia Erivo. Should I be?

If I was Jennifer I would wanna play Celie but who knows maybe she prefers Shug. Does anyone else think there's a chance they could get Jennifer Holiday to do Sofia? I know she's doing that weird little tour of the color purple. Maybe the tour is a test run?

Just an idea but I think Jennifer sees Shug as an easier road to a TONY.

J-Hud and J-Hol not only in the same theater but in the same show.

I would love to be a fly on the wall of that production.

I still think it's way too soon for a Broadway revival of this show. Wasn't the OBP less than a decade ago? Meanwhile older shows that have never gotten a Broadway revival collect dust. I don't get it...

If it's a quality production with a great cast and design, then who's to say it's too soon? Lots of people enjoy the show and it'll give people who haven't seen seen the show the opportunity to experience it for the first time.

I think Hudson and Holliday would sell extremely well. And think of the Broadway cares things they could do to raise money. They could do And I am telling you duet style!

This is so exciting but I cannot believe we're due for a revival! I saw the original production! I feel so old!

I love that J Hud will be in a supporting role - but I also can't help but agree with the poster above who mentioned it could be her path to a Tony :P She did after all name her dogs after awards.

Jennifer Holliday may be playing Sofia on a bus and truck tour, but at 54, she's way too old for the role. Oprah was 30 when she made the film and the actress who played the role in this production previously (Sophia Nomvete) appears around the same age.

To Ado

Some shows will be revived to death while others gather dust on a shelf. That is the way it is

Re Purple. Saw the original .Had not intended to see this and now with a 1/2 chopped out it is definitely not on our must see list. Yes Ado, it is too soon for a revival but if not this the umpteenth revival of Grease or Guys and Dolls.

Cynthia Erivo is one of the most exciting young British performers to emerge in recent years. I first noticed her in the ensemble of the flop "The Umbrellas of Cherboug" she went on to lead the national tour of Sister Act before wining those rave reviews for the stripped down "The Color Purple".

She is an incredibly honest actor who is just as comfortable in Shakespeare as she is with a high F. Benefit of the RADA training I guess. She is also the only performer I've seen who was capable of giving emotional depth to a song written by Scott Alan.

Big fan of her work and I hope we don't lose her to the USA.

Oh and she survived the flop "I Can't Sing" with grace bouncing back into a tiny venue stealing the show with the UK premiere of "Dessa Rose". Without fan girling too much she is the real deal - just send her back to lead the British premiere of Dreamgirls someday. Updated On: 3/16/15 at 02:54 PM
