Stumbled upon this today at the Marquis. I was beyond confused for about 15 minutes then saw the Smash production trucks out front and finally figured it out. Snapped a few pictures on my phone outside of the theatre. Blurry...
The show's ratings are low but much like the Tony Awards, it does really well with higher income viewers. This makes it desirable for luxury goods advertisers such as car companies, etc.
^ I believe that spot currently belongs to SNL, despite it being outside of prime time. I think "The Biggest Loser" is NBC's highest rated prime time show, which isn't saying much. But when "The Voice" and "Revolution" return to air shortly, they're both sure to be MUCH higher rated than "Smash."
As much as I like seeing some of my Broadway favorites on network TV, "Smash" costs several million dollars per episode so I wouldn't be surprised if they cut it late this spring -- if I remember correctly, early this year they had already sunk close to $65 million into the show's second season, which is probably the largest reason behind keeping it on air for the time being.
ETA: Thanks for sharing the pics, by the way - always interesting to see behind the scenes stuff :)
