Wather Matthau was a great comedic actor, but you can't tell from watching him in this movie. He looks like he wants to be someplace else.
Barbra, even though fun to watch, is so badly miscast. She's funny, she sings great, but she's not the character. There were so many great ladies who had done the stage show who had also done movies. Why couldn't they have picked one of them?
The only actor who seems to be well cast is the one doing Barnaby (and I think he is the only one who did the stage show as well).
Of course nothing in the movie is as bad as the extremely hammy overacting of Michael Crawford. He is SO HORRIBLE.
I still love the movie...warts and all. The singing and dancing are infectious...it's a lot of fun. It reminds me of those old MGM musicals of the past...and that's no mere coincidence when Roger Edens, Gene Kelly and Michael Kidd were all involved.
It's a whole helluva lot better than the films Hollywood is passing off as musicals nowadays, that's for damn sure.
It is such fun movie and I think it holds up very well. And even if she is miscast.. I happen to LOVE Streisand's performance in it. I will be pre ordering this. A little disappointed in the extras. But still so worth having.
