I just watched the live stream of parts of the People's Choice Awards on whatsonstage.com. It seemed to me to be really tacky and embarrassing. The emcees were really rude. I would almost have been embarrassed to go up on that stage to collect my win, but I suppose a win is a win. Is is like this every year? I expected something a bit classier, especially from the Brits.
I have never seen it before, but on twitter there were a lot of people complaining about how tacky it seemed, and how normally it was classier, and that the hosts seemed to have little or no interest in what was actually happening! If you want a properly British awards show watch the Olivier Awards next time!
I haven't seen the ceremony yet, but the Whatsonstage awards are never particularly classy. At least this year there were no audible groans from the audience when a winner was announced, unlike a year or so ago when Amanda Holden won Best Actress for Shrek...
Rufus Hound and Mel Giedroyc are both comedians, rather than theatre glitterati (Hound is currently starring in ONE MAN TWO GUVNORS and Mel was hysterically funny in a very bad musical about the Eurovision Song Contest a few years back). It's always been a bit tacky and rude.
Bear in mind that for many of the winners, more people will have voted for them than could have actually seen the production they won for...
