So for DROOD, does this mean Jim Norton and Stephanie J. Block will be considered for Best Actor/Actress?

Confused about Drood...where does that put Andy Karl, Jessie Mueller, and Betsy Wolfe?

They go to the featured category since their names aren't above the title.

But why isn't MIss Hannigan in Annie in the leading category like Dorothy Loudon won it for? Haven't seen Katie yet but how does a leading part go to a featured part without changing the script and songs?

Andy, Betsy, and Jessie are all in featured, though I imagine a nomination for any of them is unlikely, given Chita and Will's placement in featured as well. Obviously, I'd love to see Jessie Mueller get her 2nd nomination, but I have a feeling I may be dreaming a bit too far.

Because it probably should have been considered a Featured part in the first place? Hannigan has two songs and about 25 minutes of stage time. Annie rarely leaves the stage and sings or is a part of 9-10 songs, at least.

Donna McKechnie won as Best Leading Actress for Cassie in A CHORUS LINE. Charlotte D'Amboise was nominated as Best Featured Actress for the same role. It's all about billing and how the producers want a performer to be listed. But it is interesting that they put Katie in Featured.....My guess is that they don't want to have two prominent performers up against eachother in the same category (Lilla and Katie) because they will often cancel echother out (like for Book of Mormon).

Any idea why they petitioned Will Chase into featured? To me his part is very large and he is the male lead, was it just to give Norton a better shot?

Hannigan was only in the Leading category the first time around because it was Loudon. It's really a featured role.

Also, interesting that they petitioned Maggie Grace and Sebastian Stan down.

The one that has me scratching my head is Dan Stevens. His character is the male lead (although David Straitharn could be there, too). I'm just puzzled-not because of name recognition, but the size of the role. (Are there that many best actor possibilities-it seems like everyone's being knocked down to featured.)

Just like the baker's wife- Joanna Gleason won for best leading actress, Kerry O'Malley got nominated for featured. One would think the Tonys should be consistent!

OOOOH, also, apparently Michael Shannon will be leading for Grace since they didn't petition him down, but Kate Arrington will be featured? Interesting.

So at this point whats the best actress race? Crawford, Carmello, Block? Is that it?

Don't forget about the Bring It On girls (not that they really have a chance). And then we have Osnes, Miller, and the Matildas coming soon. I'm not sure if there are any leading ladies in Hands on a Hardbody.

The title of the award itself is for the Actor, not the Role or the Character, which is why it's always about billing and petitioning.

Matt, totally agree. But what with his involvement on Smash and the leading roles he's played in the past, I thought for sure Will Chase would be considered in leading. I truly hope Jim Norton gets a nomination though, what he does in that show is incredible and worthy of notice. I could see Stephanie and Chita being competitive as well.

Guess Jessie Mueller will have to wait until FUNNY GIRL for her 2nd Tony nomination (and first win).

How on earth is The Anarchist eligible?

Chita would have been competitive in the leading category, but now that she's in featured, she's up against Andrea Martin who will surely be bringing home the Tony.

I wouldn't count out Mueller or Wolfe just yet. Drood is definitely one of the standout shows of the fall, and if the spring ends up being as barren as the fall, I would not be shocked to see two (or maybe even three) tony noms in the featured category for Drood.

I think Betsy Wolfe has a shot at a Featured Actress nomination, too. She was wonderful the night I saw Drood.

I wouldn't rule out Mueller yet. She has a lot of love in the community.

What a weak year for leading actresses in musicals. Gah, I wish Far From Heaven were coming straight to Broadway so Kelli could finally pick up her first Tony. I'm guessing the Matildas are going to pick this one up with a Lilla Crawford not far behind.

I wonder if Patina will be considered leading as the LP in Pippin.

"Just like the baker's wife- Joanna Gleason won for best leading actress, Kerry O'Malley got nominated for featured."

Instead of being nominated for a Tony, Kerry O'Malley should have been transferred to Guantanamo and held for crimes against the United States and all of humanity for what she did to that role.

If Jessie Mueller was nominated for On a Clear Day, she's definitely got a shot this year too. She's a standout in Drood.

I'd imagine Patina would be considered Leading. They wouldn't want her competing with d'Amboise or Martin. Also, it's a leading role considering the character's category placement in the original production.

I know, but I figured it might go the way of Hannigan and the Baker's Wife.

I think Jessie Mueller should be nominated 100% and I am definitely not ruling her out. I just think Chita may get it for her stature and her career, and nominators may feel Mueller has a very long career in front of her and will inevitably be nominated plenty of times in the future, which I would imagine will be true.

I also wonder how nominators seeing one ending over another may affect perceptions of peoples' performances. We shall see!

UPDATE FROM PLAYBILL.COM

Playbill.com has learned that the short-lived comedy The Performers, which co-starred Cheyenne Jackson and Henry Winkler, did not run long enough to be eligible for nomination; however, both the new musical Scandalous and the two-person David Mamet drama The Anarchist, which are also both closed, are eligible for nomination. None of three solo shows — Running On Empty, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and Manilow On Broadway — sought eligibility. The brief holiday run of Elf The Musical, which had previously been seen on Broadway, is not eligible for a Best Revival of a Musical nomination; however, the limited holiday engagement of A Christmas Story The Musical is eligible for a Best New Musical nomination.
