Most awkward moment you ever had in a theater?

I'm curious. What happened at a show you were at that made you uncomfortable or red in the face?

The only one I can think of was during the nude scene in Hair which I dragged my parents to. We were in the third row and my parents had no idea it was going to happen.

Oh, and when my friend and I were in the rush line for Evita a couple of weeks before it closed, a guy in sweats looked a little.... Uh... Excited to be there if you catch my drift...

When a certain comedienne who has had one too many facelifts sat next to me and fell asleep during the show. I sat through the entire Act 1 wondering if I should wake her before the house lights came on at Intermission. AWK-WARD!

I had the same experience at HAIR, but with my girlfriend. She wanted to leave. REALLY akward.

?? Is this the 10 second flash nude scene? I don't remember anything particularly awkward about it. What would have happened if you saw HIGH?

It was just because we were so close to the stage. It was also awkward because I accidentally bought tickets to the night performance where they had the three gay couples married on stage afterwards. My mom and I thought it would be wonderful, but my dad (who isn't quite as... liberal) just found it all awkward.

qolbinau, you, me and about ten other people saw HIGH. Interesting you mention it, though, because I couldn't think of an awkward theater moment, but that one, in HIGH, where a drug addict strips nude and attempts to rape a nun who could easily break him in half, had me feeling bad for both actors. It was a badly written and totally gratuitous scene. Embarrassing.

Awkward moment.

End of Act one in Spring Awakening. Lea and Jonathon having sex on stage. The two 14 year old boys I was with in disbelief. We never discussed it for a nano second.

I saw Baby It's You on Blogger Night surrounded by a couple of the bloggers who took full advantage of the preshow cocktails. Awkward.

Robert Morse in Wicked.

The chandelier in Phantom rising in silence because it got caught on something, which somehow threw off the pre-recorded part of the overture.

A drunk family in the front row at Jersey Boys.

Either Robert Goulet's first performance in LA CAGE where he didn't know any of his lines or A CATERED AFFAIR when the guy next to me in the balcony was getting a hand job from the woman he was with.

BAHA REALLY???? You know, you always hear those stories about public sex stuff and I've always wondered what goes on in the minds of the people around them.

Mary Testa threw a pair of underwear at me in Xanadu. I was in the right side front row alone, so it felt a little odd.

I guess Spring Awakening was awkward when I was fourteen.

My personal most awkward moment, though, was when I got into a disagreement with my best friend over which show to rush. I had championed Death Takes a Holiday. She sat through intermission in stone cold silence and I had to pretend I was loving it.

I can't divulge that information here on BWW it's too pornographic.

Carlos don't be a tease!

I do't know that I have any "awkward" moments in a theatre.

Not an awkward moment-more a 'you gotta see this' funny moment.A show I was in,when the chorus girls came on in skimpy costumes,a guy in the prompt box was whacking off-very visible from the stage. He only stopped when the chorus boys came on[pun intended]--how rude.

"The Secret Garden" - late in the run, and I didn't much care for the lead girl. At one point her father is talking about sending her away to school and says something like, "It should be somewhere where she can learn to sing and act" -and I guffawed. Then realized that it wasn't meant to be a joke and slunk down in my seat...

Or "Saturday Night Fever" from the 3rd row, spent mostly hiding behind our Playbills trying to hide our sarcastic laughter from the cast (who could clearly see us- and it wasn't their fault the show was ludicrous). But when those mirrors began to close in on Paul Castree as he sang a slow heartfelt reprise of "Tragedy" (a tragedy, because his pregnant girlfriend wouldn't get an abortion) I think we nearly ended up on the floor.

Why is nudity awkward to you guys? Nudity is the only reason I ever go to see plays. If it doesn't have songs someone better be getting naked!

When I saw RENT this summer in NYC (New World Stages), the Mark could obviously tell my wife and I weren't liking the show. We were on the 3rd row, and he made eye contact and everything to draw us in. Not awkward, but I felt bad for him. He was the best part of the show. The bag lady was the second best part.

When I went to go see Titanic with my school, a couple of parents went and one mom fell asleep in the first ten minutes of the show and slept through the whole first act when the house light came on for intermission she suddenly woke up and stood up and started clapping and hooping and hollaring!(that whole intermission everyone one was making jokes and bets on if she would stay awake in the second act)...then the second act rolled around and me and my theatre teacher looked down the row and she was sleeping again! Just like the first act she slept through the second act!But as soon as she heard clapping she stood up and gave a standing ovation to the smallest part in the whole show....the kid who holds up the boat....awkward and HYSTERICAL!...the mom walked out there saying I really liked that show....

That reminds me! I was at the soundboard in the back of our school's theater during our production of Rumors last November, and in the middle of the first act, all of a sudden you hear this extremely loud snoring. One of the parents of the actors had fallen asleep!

Sadly, the audience during that matinee thought that was the only funny part about the show (apparently Neil Simons humor goes over the heads of my fellow high school students).

CJ N2N, at least you are not like my local high school. They did a production of Rumors in January, which I could not bring myself to go see, because they spelled "farce" on the posters "farse". I think the quality of the theater program at my high school is on the decline since I was gone from there.

I was at the last performance of Phantom prior to the 25th anniversary. It was a a sold out house and I was in standing room. There was a young couple in front of me that looked to be around my age (early to mid twenties.) Not only were they making out for a majority of the time (which was distracting and annoying.) But, at one point the girl put a jacket over the guys lap and not so subtly starting pumping away. I didn't know that Phantom was a show with a happy ending.
